| Caffeine and I have a love-hate relationship. I love the enthusiasm it gives me, but I'm also super sensitive and can easily overdo it. Essentially, I love caffeine when the levels in my bloodstream are optimal. Any less or any more and I'm a wreck. | We actually get this question into our inbox all the time: How much caffeine is too much caffeine? And since caffeine is one of the most popular substances on Earth, it felt appropriate to take that question to one of the experts we work with. So Jessica Sandoz, a registered dietitian at Healthline, is here today with her thoughts. | | | | Drink up (cautiously), Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik August 13, 2024 • 3.5 min read | | | | | | Q: | How much caffeine is *too much* to drink in a day? | | A: | As delightful as the effects of caffeine can be, it's definitely possible to overdo it with this legal stimulant. So how much is too much?
Technically speaking, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a limit of 400 milligrams (mg) per day, which is about 4 cups (32 ounces) of coffee. (Obviously, the strength of a cup of coffee varies greatly depending on how it's made and the type and amount of beans that are used. So make sure to keep tabs on how you're feeling after each cup and to ease up if you start to feel side effects.) Research suggests that consuming more than 4 cups a day can lead to unwanted side effects like increased heart rate, anxiety, nausea, headaches, and insomnia. | | | But everyone's tolerance is different. Many of you might see 4 cups a day and think "No way could I drink that much without getting anxiety," just as many people may be able to put away a lot more than that while still feeling fine.
It's also important to know that some caffeinated drinks can have double the amount that's in a cup of coffee or more. Always check the Nutrition Facts labels on food and beverages to try to see how much caffeine you're consuming. FYI: Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, and labeling may not be accurate.
On the topic of supplements, this is the most likely way to "overdose" on caffeine. The FDA estimates that taking 1,200 mg of pure caffeine at once or in a short amount of time can lead to toxic effects. In fact, 1 teaspoon of pure powdered caffeine can contain the same amount of caffeine as 28 cups of coffee!
As with any substance, pay attention to how your body responds to certain amounts of caffeine. If you find that 2 cups a day makes it hard for you to sleep, consider cutting down to 1 cup instead. And it may be good to know that even decaffeinated coffee may have some caffeine in it.
