| Few fad diets have captured the hearts and minds of as many people, for as many years, as the ketogenic diet, or "keto" for short. It's stuck around for so long, it may not be fair to call it a fad at all. A keto diet (eating high fat foods and a very small amount of carbs) is the most effective way to move your metabolism into a state of ketosis, in which your body burns fat for fuel instead of carbs. The keto diet has a loyal following of devotees. | But are there bona fide benefits to this trendy diet? We invited Mohini Bhakta, a registered dietitian at Healthline, back to get her take. | | | | Hope this helps! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik August 27, 2024 • 3.5 min read | | | | | | Q: | What is the keto diet, and why did it become so popular? | | A: | The "keto diet" has taken on many forms over the years! A true ketogenic diet is a very high fat, low protein, low carb diet. About 90% of calories come from fat on this diet, which is pretty extreme! The only population where we see any health benefit to following a true keto diet is in children with epilepsy, where it has been shown to decrease seizure frequency.
Most of what we see or hear about is a modified keto. This rose to popularity in the 1990s with the Atkins diet. This modified approach, which ballparks macros to about 60% to 70% fat, 20% to 30% protein, and 5% to 10% carbs, is what most people will be aiming for when following keto.
The idea behind this higher fat approach is using a different type of fuel for our bodies, called ketones, rather than carbs — which are our preferred energy source. It became popular as a weight loss diet because it works … in the short term, at least! With a high fat diet, we are likely to feel fuller for longer and eat fewer calories overall.
However, long-term health benefits, including sustained weight loss, haven't been supported, and keto may not be safe for everyone. There will likely be a significant reduction of nutrient variety, and it may increase some people's risk of high cholesterol. Since this diet is such a drastic change to most people's food groups, it's important to work with your physician and dietitian to make sure you're getting all the nutrients your body requires to function at its best. | | | Mohini Bhakta, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject? Safe to say I burned and/or overcooked a lot of food during that era. Then I finally came into a high quality stainless steel saucepan like this one from All-Clad, and I've never looked back. The main benefit, I find, is being able to simmer sauces without getting them overly hot. These puppies are also way more durable and easier to clean, especially if you take good care of them. | | Every product we recommend has gone through either Healthline's or Optum Store's vetting processes.
