1 big thing: School shooting leaves 4 dead

Two students and two teachers were killed in a shooting this morning at Apalachee High School in rural Winder, Ga. Nine people were hospitalized.

  • The suspect is a 14-year-old student who will be charged with murder and tried as an adult, Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said at a late-afternoon briefing aired live by CNN.

Barrow County (Ga.) Sheriff Jud Smith said at the briefing that a school resource officer engaged the armed suspect: "He gave up, got on the ground and was taken into custody. … We don't know of any targets at this point."

  • The school is in Atlanta's outer exurbs.

Students inside the school texted their families to say "I love you" as they barricaded themselves inside their classrooms amid the sound of gunshots.

  • "What you see behind us is an evil thing," the sheriff said as he stood in front of the school during a press conference.

President Biden said in a statement: "What should have been a joyous back-to-school season ... has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart."

  • New Zealand this week became the latest in an increasing number of tourist hotspots to impose new fees on tourists.

🏝️ Bali, Venice, Amsterdam and Lisbon all either instituted or hiked tourist fees this year. Barcelona has raised its tourist taxes several times recently and may raise them again soon.

There's a new way to make your kid's wildest dreams come true on their birthday: a Taylor Swift tribute artist.

  • Amanda Browning-Bloyd has been blowing up the D.C.-area birthday party scene since the "Eras" tour took over the world.
  • After years spent playing various fictional princesses, she spent a few months learning the words and dances to some of Swift's biggest hits. It has paid off — she's already booking into January 2025.

💖 The reviews are in: Axios' Kristen Hinman recently hired Browning-Bloyd for a second-grade dance party. The kids were so stunned they barely moved during "Taylor's" first songs.

  • "Is that really her? Is it, is it?" they asked, over and over.
