| | A cancer diagnosis is never welcome news. But did you know that breast cancer is highly treatable? Over 90% of people will live at least 5 years past their initial diagnosis, and 83% live 10 years or longer.
The type of treatment your care team will recommend depends on many factors, including the type, stage, and grade of your cancer, and your personal preferences. It's typical to be treated with a combination of therapies. Common treatments for breast cancer include: | • | Surgery: Breast cancer is commonly treated by surgically removing affected tissue. Surgery is particularly effective in the early stages before the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. | | • | Radiation therapy: This treatment uses high energy rays or particles to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy is often used to reduce the risk of recurrence after surgery, to treat tumors that can't be removed surgically, and for metastatic breast cancer. | | • | Chemotherapy: This is a class of drugs, often administered by infusion, designed to kill cancer cells. Your oncologist will make a recommendation based on your individual situation. Not everyone with breast cancer needs chemo. | | • | Hormone therapy: These drugs block the production of hormones (or stop them from working in the usual way) in order to kill cancer cells. Doctors commonly recommend hormone therapy if you have any stage of HR-positive breast cancer. | | • | Targeted therapy: This category of treatment identifies and attacks specific proteins or genes in cancer cells. Your doctor may recommend this therapy if your tumor contains a target for which there is a drug. | | | | Your care team will help find the right treatment for you | While it's helpful to learn about your treatment options, it can also feel overwhelming to receive so much new information.
