Election News You Can Really Use on November 5

We Check Facts, Call B.S. and Cut Through the Mess.

Hi, Politics seem to be all the rage these days. But with so many outlets covering the presidential election, you might be wondering how the results might affect you right here in DFW. And oh yeah, what's going on in our local races? We at Dallas Observer seek to provide you with the answers that matter most to you. That's why we're curating our election coverage with you, our fellow Dallasites, in mind.  We take a look at what's happening on the national stage and how that applies to you. Take when vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance debated recently. We called out the biggest lies each of them told from the stage that night and shed light on the truth.  Meanwhile, we keep a close watch on our local candidates—particularly Colin Allred, who's running against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz for U.S. Senator. Should the former NFL player and Dallas Congressman defeat Cruz, it will be the first time in three decades that a Democrat would win a statewide office in Texas.  Here in Dallas, we also have several key ballot measures appearing that could go a long way in deciding how the Big D is not only run, but policed as well. Three HERO Dallas charter amendments made it onto the ballot thanks to a well-connected group of conservatives that hope to force the city into hiring many hundreds of more police officers soon, something that many city officials say could be catastrophic to many other necessary programs in Dallas.  The state of today's politics naturally lends itself to some, shall we say, weird discussions. Take for example how Vance derided "childless cat ladies" not that long ago. We spoke to a number of local examples of childless cat ladies to get their take on how they felt about Vance using them as a punchline. And recently, Lara Logan, a prominent, national conservative reporter with a penchant for conspiracy theories incorrectly reported that Tarrant County had illegally sent out 7 million mail-in ballots for the November election. We found out that wasn't only not true, but we asked Dallas, Denton and Collin Counties how many ballots they had mailed out so far for this election. Hint: it was a lot less than 7 million.  We're also having some fun when we can (if you can believe that). Like when our reporter attended both the Republican and Democratic watch parties for the September presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. They were in the same movie theater, and Texas Attorney Gen. Ken Paxton was in attendance (we'll let you guess which one he went to), so we couldn't resist.  Whether it's a hard-hitting exposé or an event coverage, we infuse it all with our no-nonsense voice.
