Americans are voting early in historic numbers.

How many? More than 18 million people have cast ballots in person or by mail. Republicans seem to be listening after Donald Trump changed his tune on early voting.
On the trail: President Joe Biden said "We've got to lock him up" about Trump, then said he didn't mean it literally. And Trump attacked Kamala Harris with a racist stereotype.
Zooming out: Harris appears to have a narrow opening with Republican-leaning voters.

What to know: The outbreak has killed one person and sickened nearly 50 people in 10 states, the CDC said yesterday. The culprit might be contaminated slivered onions or beef patties.

Colleges enrolled fewer freshman for the first time since the pandemic.

The data: Enrollment for White freshmen is down 11%, while Black and multiracial freshmen dropped 6%, a new report found. However, overall undergrad numbers are up.
What's causing the decline? Possible reasons include the defeat of affirmative action in admissions, troubled financial aid applications, the cost of college and a shifting labor market.

This hoard of silver coins is the most valuable treasure ever found in Britain.

What you're looking at: Thousands of coins from the 11th century. They were unearthed by amateur treasure hunters in 2019, and recently sold for around $5.6 million.
Who gets the money? It will be split between the friends who found the treasure and the landowner. The coins will be displayed at the British Museum starting next month.
