Research suggests that diets rich in added salt may significantly increase blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease and other chronic conditions. Thus, it may be necessary for some people to cut back on their sodium intake. When making changes to your diet, it can help to start slow. Instead of completely changing the way you eat, try implementing these four strategic changes: - Replace salt with spices, herbs, or salt-free seasonings.
- Cook more meals at home with fresh, flavorful ingredients.
- When buying processed foods, read nutrition labels and choose low sodium options.
- Rinse canned foods before eating them.
The National Kidney Foundation also suggests avoiding the foods below when following a low sodium diet: - ultra-processed foods
- salty snacks
- canned meals and frozen dinners
- high sodium sauces like teriyaki, soy, and barbecue
- cured foods like bacon, ham, and pickles
- deli meats, including pastrami, sausage, and corned beef
