1 big thing: The most trusted professions

Stacked bar chart showing the share of people who say they rate the honesty and ethics of a profession highly or very highly. The professions viewed most highly were nurses, grade-school teachers, military officers, pharmacists and doctors. TV reporters, members of Congress and lobbyists were viewed most negatively.
Data: Gallup; Chart: Axios Visuals

Americans have consistently viewed medical workers, teachers and military officers as the most ethical professions — but even their ratings have dropped considerably, Axios' April Rubin reports from new Gallup polling.

  • Three of the five professions with majority positive ratings were in medical fields — but trust in medical doctors and pharmacists has dropped below pre-pandemic levels.
  • Judges and clergy still enjoy positive ratings, but they've seen enormous decreases over time.

🔻 Three professions have majority negative ratings: TV reporters, members of Congress and lobbyists.

  • Advertising practitioners, car salespeople, business executives and state officeholders were also near the bottom of the list.

Weather forecasters have only more bad news for firefighters battling the L.A.-area fires, Axios' Andrew Freedman reports.

🚨 Zoom in: Winds during this event will be closer to a typical strong Santa Ana, at 50–70 mph instead of up to 100 mph as seen last week.

  • But the east-to-west air flow will likely target areas that didn't have such strong winds last week, particularly in Ventura County.
  • "THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION (PDS) FOR PORTIONS OF LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES!" the NWS said.

Forget Michelin stars — celebrity chef José Andrés' restaurant group is shooting for the moon, teaming up with an aerospace engineer to pioneer cooking in space, Axios D.C.'s Anna Spiegel writes.

  • José Andrés Group is working with engineer Jim Sears of Ascent Technology to research and develop recipes for SATED Space, a cooking device designed to prepare food in zero gravity.
  • SATED can make pizza, brownies or even cornbread with a cheesy, caramelized crust.

👩‍🚀 This isn't Andrés' first foray into the final frontier. In 2022, he helped develop a pioneering space paella, which was sent to the International Space Station.
