Welcome, humans. |
A personal note before today's AI news... |
Our hearts are heavy thinking about everyone affected by the raging fires in LA. While we usually geek out about new AI models training in the cloud, today our thoughts are with the very real people dealing with this crisis in our own backyard (our Lead Writer Grant is based in LA—don't worry, he's safe!). |
The tech world can feel like its own bubble sometimes—all algorithms and architectures, the stuff of silicon chips and faraway data centers you don't ever see. But today reminds us of tech's true purpose: improving real lives in real ways for real people. |
Hard to focus on those benefits when real life gets turned upside down. We hope you're reading this from somewhere safe. ❤️️ |
Here's what you need to know about AI today: |
Jensen Huang's CES keynote is making waves… we discuss! Omi is a new startup building a brain-computer interface gadget. We share 4 of our personal favorite AI tools. Grok might get a new "Unhinged Mode" soon…
|
|
|
NVIDIA isn't riding the AI wave, it's creating it. |
When your Uncle messages you and your entire family at the crack of dawn to watch Jensen Huang's 90-minute CES keynote, you cancel all plans and binge on 2x speed, no questions asked. |
(For those of you who'd rather watch paint dry than sit through a 90-minute technical keynote, we use a tool called Glasp that summarizes any YouTube video in one click—we like Claude cause it's the quickest. Try it here). |

|
First things first, Jensen's leather jackets just keep getting better and better... that NVIDIA stock jump really can afford a decent wardrobe. |
Now onto the important stuff: NVIDIA's new AI chip (these are the things that power ChatGPT, Claude, and basically every other AI model you use) is called Blackwell, and it's the crème de la crème of AI chips. The specs are wild: |
4x better performance per watt than previous gen. 3x better cost efficiency (performance per dollar). 130 TRILLION transistors (yeah, with a T). Memory bandwidth that Jensen claims equals current global internet traffic.
|
TLDR: More AI, cheaper AI. Your CFO will be happy. |
Then Jensen confirmed what we've been saying for months (years??): the next stage of AI after generative AI is agentic AI (i.e., "agents"). |
The way Jensen explained what this will actually look like is interesting: take an IT department. |
Right now, they manage and maintain software systems across the company. Soon, they'll have AI agents doing everything from customer service to logistics optimization. So next, IT leaders will start to become the HR departments for AI—onboarding new AI agents, setting their permissions (aka what they can/can't do), and managing their "workforce" just like they manage software today.
|
Pro tip: Go to Claude, give it a bunch of context about what you do at work, and then ask it how agents like the ones Jensen is talking about will change the way you do work, and how you can be more prepared for this world. |
By cold brew #3, Jensen dropped another bomb: "Cosmos," its new world foundation model that's trained on 20M hours (!) of physical/dynamic video. Developers can try Cosmos here. |
Think of Cosmos as an AI that actually understands how the real world works—physics, object permanence, cause and effect. The implications are everything from better robots to smarter autonomous systems. |
Speaking of which... there were a bunch of cool announcements around Autonomous Vehicles (1:07:38) & Robotics (1:16:20)—check out the keynote here for those. |
Why it matters: NVIDIA isn't just riding the AI wave—they're building the surfboard, the beach, and probably the ocean too. Now excuse us while we go practice our leather jacket poses... just in case. |

FROM OUR PARTNERS |
Here's a voice AI that actually understands what you're saying. |
|
Ever try using voice AI and end up repeating yourself five times? Or worse, watch it completely butcher what you just said? (cough every drive-thru ever cough). |
Speechmatics is changing that with what they're calling "the best ears in AI"—and they might actually have a point. Their technology can: |
Understand you in real-time, even in noisy environments. Pick up different accents and dialects without confusion. Follow group conversations seamlessly.
|
For industries like healthcare and education, where accuracy is crucial, this is a game-changer. Customer relationships are built on listening well, and Speechmatics ensures your AI does exactly that. |
Try it in seconds here. |

Treats To Try. |
If you don't already know, we spend our time outside of this newsletter drinking cold brews and testing all the latest AI tools on the market. |

Thursday Trivia. |
One is a real image, and one is AI. Which is which? (vote below!). |
A. |
|
B. |
|
Which is AI? The answer is below, but place your vote to see how your guess compares to everyone else (no cheating now!) |
|
Here are the results from the last trivia in December: |
|
That's 5 - human, 2 - robots. We're gonna have to make these harder! |
Here's what you said: |
Peter chose B: "If A is the AI I will give up attempting this permanently." R.B. chose A: "The baby's fingers are not the expected short, stubby baby fingers. That is, they're too long..." J.M. chose B: "Looks photoshopped if you ask me ... "
|
|
|
| #thanks! |
|
|
Trivia Answer: A is real and B is AI (we can't believe it either!!). |
