TOP STORY: US Government shuts down THE 101: The U.S. government entered a shutdown overnight after President Donald Trump and Congress failed to make a deal to keep government services running by the deadline.   WHY IT MATTERS: Hundreds of thousands of federal workers could be facing furloughs, and even the services that remain operational could face delays due to staffing shortages.   House Republicans had approved a temporary funding bill ahead of the deadline, but the bill failed repeatedly in the Senate, where it requires a 60-vote threshold to pass.   MAIN TAKEAWAYS: Among the key issues is health care. Democrats are pushing for funding for health care subsidies that will expire for millions of people under the Affordable Care Act, while Republicans have refused to negotiate for now. This is the third shutdown under Trump, but the first during his second stint in the White House. IAN ROBERTS Dr. Ian Roberts has resigned as the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. Roberts was arrested by ICE officials last week.   Lawyers for Roberts submitted a letter of resignation Tuesday on his behalf.
