Ten Enemies Killed, One Detained in Iraq, Afghanistan Operations

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 23, 2006 - Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan on March 21 left 10 enemy fighters dead, military officials reported.

Four al Qaeda terrorists were killed when they engaged coalition forces during a raid about eight miles south of Samarra, Iraq, Multinational Force Iraq officials said.

Troops approached three vehicles during a raid against a top al Qaeda cell leader who controls a large number of al Qaeda associates in the area near Samarra and Balad, officials said. The enemy, positioned around the vehicles, engaged the coalition troops. A firefight ensued, and four enemy terrorists were killed. A fourth was detained.

Coalition forces discovered an assortment of small and medium arms and mortar munitions in the vehicles. The vehicles and weapons were destroyed in place.

The same day in the Uruzgan province of Afghanistan, Afghan National Army soldiers, advised by coalition forces, attacked a Taliban command cell, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan officials said.

The forces killed six enemy fighters and recovered bomb-making materials.

This was the fourth time in the past month soldiers from the 3rd Kandak, 1st Brigade, of the Afghan National Army's 205th Corps, conducted operations deep in what had been the insurgents' safe haven.

"We have many enemies of Afghanistan to get rid of, and we are prepared to do so," said Command Sgt. Maj. Abdul Sami, the 205th Corps' command sergeant major.

The Afghan National Army has about 30,000 trained soldiers organized into five corps. Afghan and coalition forces frequently conduct combat operations to deny enemy forces sanctuary and freedom of movement, to defeat the Taliban and associated networks and prevent the re-emergence of terrorism in Afghanistan, officials said.
