1. Summer school for teachers ..........

Unlike your students, your school year doesn�t end when the summer begins. That�s when many educators, like yourself, decide to go back to school. This year, Apple Professional Development will offer a series of four-day Summer Institutes designed to help you enhance student learning by effectively integrating technology into your curriculum.

Each class is a hands-on workshop that will provide a variety of new and exciting ideas teachers can use right away to engage their students. You can choose from courses of general interest, such as using iLife '06 in the classroom or podcasting in education, or you can select topics of more specialized interest.

"Special Education: Reaching All Learners," for example, explores how the built-in accessibility features of Mac OS X Tiger can help enhance learning for students with special needs. "Empowering English Language Learners" is a course designed to help teachers meet the diverse needs of ELL students through the use of multi-sensory digital tools. 2. Desktop management made easy ..........

Apple Remote Desktop 3 is the latest release of Apple's award-winning desktop management software and it's the best way to manage the Mac computers on your network. With more than 50 new features there are even more tools to help distribute software, manage assets, and provide remote assistance.

Now you have the power to perform lightning-fast Spotlight searches across multiple Tiger systems, making it a snap to find that one file or folder on the network. The new Dashboard widget gives a quick and convenient observation of remote systems. And the AutoInstall function makes it possible to automatically update software on mobile systems once they return to the network.

Over 30 Automator actions are also included so schools and districts running Mac OS X Tiger can take advantage of many time-saving shortcuts. These workflows can be shared with anyone in the organization with an Apple Remote Desktop license, so teachers can use Automator actions to perform tasks such as locking screens or setting the desktop picture with just one-click, across the entire classroom.

3. Explore the world from your classroom ..........

The Apple Digital Learning Solutions just got more scientific with the release of the Earth Science and Life Science and Biology series. Designed for grades 6-12, each series contains research-based educational software and supplementary materials.

The Life Science and Biology series combines standards-based content with problem-solving activities and interactive tools, giving students the core knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about critical science issues. These tools allow students to explore concepts ranging from cellular biology to ecology. They can even dissect a virtual frog.

The Earth Science series makes it easy for students to connect with real world and real-time Earth and space phenomena. The solutions support the multidisciplinary nature of Earth science and explores a variety of issues, including weather, astronomy, oceanography, and geology. With this series, your students can track Antarctic icebergs, follow the path of stars, and study earthquake activity, all from the safety of your classroom.

4 It's technology central ..........

What started as a simple redecoration plan has turned into a fully-fledged technological upgrade for Central High School in Philadelphia. Their newly renovated library is a model of state-of-the-art digital learning. With nearly 300 computers, including iMac G5 and Power Mac G5 workstations in the library, plus wireless iBook laptops for every faculty member, Central High has truly become a 21st century school.

Apple was their choice for a variety of reasons, including ease of use, not having to add to their IT staff, and their commitment to education. "Apple's been in the education 'biz' for a long time," says assistant principal, Reg Speir. "They know their stuff. With the PC manufacturers, it would have been 'drop the machines; make sure they work, and bye-bye.' Their presence in education just doesn't compare to Apple's."

So far, the results have been overwhelmingly positive. The students are excited about learning, so much so that nearly 1100 students a day visit the library. According to Central High's president, Dr. Sheldon Pavel, "we're in the business of trying to help kids learn to the best of their ability. With Apple's help we've raised that upper limit, beyond what we ever thought was possible."

5. Jot down these notes ............................................ The Quiz Press is a fast, easy way to create tests and quizzes and to distribute them via the Web or through print. You can create multiple-choice tests, fill-in-the-blanks, short answer, true or false quizzes and more. This month's featured product in the Apple Digital Learning Series is ExploreLearning Gizmos by ProQuest Information and Learning Company. It's a modular, Web-based program that uses simulations to demonstrate math and science problems and encourage inquiry and exploration. Student Voices from the Gulf Coast is a special area of the Apple Student Gallery, featuring works created by students from Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.
