They’re routers, they deliver wireless connectivity and can be had for $150 or less. There are some great choices from Linksys, SMC, and Trendnet. PCMag shows you how to get connected without getting fleeced. What’s It All About, Twitter? Wait, I think I got it—nope, it slipped through my fingers again. Every time I think I finally know why the microblog platform Twitter exists and why I’m using it, I realize I’m wrong. Worse yet, I’m worried that Twitter’s sole purpose may be for people to compare how many followers they have. At this writing I have 248—wow, I can’t stop myself. That’s not what Twitter is all about. Or is it? Read my column and see if you can figure it out. Ten Awesome T-Shirts for Geeks One of my favorite T-shirts is my “I’m Not a Robot” shirt. It was a gift from my fellow editors, who always make fun of my fascination with robots. Now I see that there’s a whole collection of tech-related wear for me to add to my collection. PCMag came up with the ten geekiest T-shirts, and I already have a favorite picked out: the Broken Image shirt. Simply classic. Check out the story to see photos of each T-shirt option. Digitize Your Records and Tapes Here’s some must-have project advice. Those VHS tapes, audiotapes and moldy LPs sitting in your basement are not just going to get up, walk over to your PC and digitize themselves. You need to do something. You need to act. I know, I know, you don’t know how. PCMag does and has produced an excellent how-to on getting cassette tapes to MP3s, VHS to DVD, and vinyl to MP3s. I won’t lie to you and say it’s all dead simple, but it’s not rocket science, either. You can get started by clicking the link. And once you’ve transferred those VHS tapes, you might think about trying out what PCMag is calling the best consumer video-editing app yet: CyberLink's PowerDirector. Read the full review for all the deets. Spore Creature Creator Goes Live The wait is over and Will Wright’s Spore Creature Creator is now available for download. I got my hands on the code, created a new spore and, for your edification, grabbed a slideshow of the whole process. Learn more after the link. PC Chipsets Today—Choice and Confusion For PC do-it-yourselfers, knowing what kind of system you want to build is only step one. To build it you have to understand it, and that means right down to the core chipset. Different motherboards use different chipsets that provide different features and support for, say, different kinds of add-on components, like memory. You could do the research on your own, but I wouldn’t suggest it. Instead, simply read ExtremeTech’s primer on all the current chipsets, along with the benefits and deficits. Since we’re already at the chip level, you might also want to check out ET’s review of AMD’s new triple-core CPU. That’s right, not two, not four, but three cores. How does this unique configuration work and what, if any, are the benefits? The review has the answers.
