Dan and Vicki are out of the office, so this week's Weekend Update newsletter will be guest-hosted by PC Mag Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff and Associate Editor Kyle Monson. Here's their take on the hottest stories that hit PCMag.com this week. Microsoft Windows 7: What the Future Holds The launch of Windows Vista seemed gigantic, but the operating system's successor may prove Gates's real legacy. What will Windows 7 hold in store? Here's what we've gleaned to date. Lance: I have to wonder if Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer now regret unveiling some of Windows 7's cool functionality at the D Conference. Honestly, Kyle, since that moment, people really stopped caring about Windows Vista. I guess it's a good thing that we were already working on this special report that covers everything we currently know about the upcoming OS. Kyle: Yeah, the Windows 7 details really took the wind out of Vista's already limp sails, and reassured the XP faithful that they'd made the right decision by sitting Vista out. Still, I have to side with one of the story's comments: Is Microsoft's corporate culture capable of producing an OS that is "smaller, lighter, and swifter than Vista"? What are we talking about? The Top Tech Issues of the Presidential Campaign The tech industry will be watching to see how a McCain or a Obama presidency will tackle key issues like Net neutrality, patent protection and piracy, broadband availability, privacy, and the availability of H1-B visas. Here's what they've pledged to do so far. Kyle: There was a bit of a scramble this week with this story--Chloe was putting the finishing touches on it just as the Democratic nomination appeared to be getting locked up by Sen. Obama. In any case, it's still interesting to get Sen. Clinton's take on tech issues, especially since she's being floated as a potential veep. Hey Lance, is PC Mag going to endorse a candidate in November? Because I don't know who to vote for. Lance: I know better than to wear my politics on my sleeve, but if people don't think this election is about technology, they're wrong. Policy deicision relating to technology will touch virtually every part of our lives over the next four years. I can't tell you who to choose, Kyle, but I CAN tell you to choose carefully. Lance: Kyle, have you tried any of these things? I've used both an Xbox 360 and the brand-new Roku Netflix as a media extender. I am totally hooked. I want my IPTV and I want it now. Kyle: My TiVo HD is networked, so it's a kinda-sorta media extender. I can download movies to it with Amazon Unbox--it's not as speedy as normal video-on-demand, but the movie selection is better (though still not great). What I really yearn for is a box that offers access to Netflix's ENTIRE catalog. Movie studios: please let that happen. I'll pay for the movies! What are we talking about? Read all about it here! Eight Handy Tools in Microsoft Word You Probably Don't Know About Microsoft Word is full of tools that can help you work faster and smarter--but only if you know about them. Kyle: Eight more super-useful tips from Neil Rubenking. There are good ideas in here for all levels and types of Office users; I had no idea Word had so many math features, nor that it had built-in translator tools. Lance: Kyle, Kyle, Kyle. Have you not heard of the 80-20 Rule? Most people use just 20 percent of any application's functionality 80 percent of the time. We rarely, if ever, dig deep. I'm thinking that if we ever dig far enough into Microsoft Office, we might find Jimmy Hoffa. What are we talking about? Read all about it here!
