Please visit: www.digitaldowntown-nyc.com | | Redemption for UMPCs I’ve been pretty hard on Ultra-Mobile PCs (aka UMPCs). Early versions were too small to be useful, and with mobile phones growing more powerful by the day I wondered why anyone would need these mid-ware products. I’m still not wrong, but the UMPC concept has changed enough—the best ones are more like superlight laptops—that I’m ready to reconsider. You should, too. Take a look at PCMag’s roundup of this once-much-maligned class of PCs. There really are a few winners in the bunch. The Budget Gamer--The LAN Party PC PC gaming is alive and well, and LAN parties remain a key part of the PC-gaming lifestyle. If you arrive at the party with an underperforming system, you’re cooked. ExtremeTech’s LAN PC head-to-head hopes to help you avoid that kind of embarrassment. The team dives deep, way deep, on the Gateway P-6860 and Falcon Fragbox E8400, two relatively affordable gaming systems. One look at the benchmarks tells me this is a one-sided victory. You’ll need to read the full report to find out which system emerged victorious. Hands On with Spore Speaking of PC gaming, the PC-and-Mac-only Spore hits store shelves this month. This after a two-year-plus development effort by Sims creator Will Wright. I’ve seen screenshots and read second-hand reports, but, honestly, I wasn’t even interested until the Spore team visited PCMag’s offices earlier this week. The demo was impressive. Then I used the Creature Creator and I was hooked. This game has huge potential. Read AppScout’s report of exactly what happened in the meeting and be sure to check out the video showing me building my first Spore creature. Resident Evil 5 Preview I think I have gaming on the brain today. I came across this extensive preview of the next chapter in one of the more popular game series on the market: Resident Evil. The screenshots are simply scary. Enjoy, if you dare. I'll Reboot if I Want To I’ve been writing columns for a long time, and I don’t usually rant—but I did today. When bad things happen to my PC, I’m increasingly turning to the action of last resort: the hard reboot. Don’t look at me that way; I know you’ve done it too. Read the column and commiserate. Come on, it’s okay to hit the off button. Review: iClone 2.5 Studio I used to make 3D text animations with Pixar’s old Typestry software, so anything to do with 3D animation is alright with me. iClone Studio is eons beyond Pixar’s early software attempt and powerful enough to let current 3D fanatics create machinima-style films they can post on YouTube. ExtremeTech has the full review. Microsoft Drops the Ball on Book Search Here’s why columnist John C. Dvorak is so darn good. He’s aware of stuff happening in the tech world long before anyone else. For example, he knew about Microsoft’s plan to digitize the world’s books (yes, Google is doing the same thing). Did you? Now he explains how Microsoft dropped the ball, and then dropped the program entirely. Nice work, Microsoft.
