One post about a sacrilege committed against a particular faith seems to have gotten a lot of attention, along with all the comments and sneers from that group of particular dim (as opposed to englightened) atheists.
Catholics don’t believe that it “symbolizes” the body of Christ, they believe it is the body of Christ (as you know). Being upset over a sacrilege in any religion is completely expected. Do you really think the Muslims “shouldn’t” be upset about someone flushing a Koran down the toilet? Reactions of violence are from a fringe even if the author of the post wants to act like they aren’t. I probably wouldn’t have come up with the label “hate crime” for this, but I’d go along with it considering what seems to be implied in the story: that someone deliberately went into a religious ceremony with the intent to perform sacrilege. (By the way, this kind of thing with the Eucharist happens all the time, but most people don’t realize: non-Christians or non-Catholics taking it, people walking out with it, etc.) I didn’t read the whole post in depth because it seemed to just degenerate into “religious people are crazy” and went way more overboard about this than the people they’re complaining about did. So I hope it’s really just meant at comedy. I may not agree with religious fanaticism, but I disagree with Dawkins and Hitchens in the contempt for belief systems and promoting the deliberate antagonizing of religious people. |
