RoughlyDrafted has information that the iPhone 2.0.2 update "fixed power control on the mobile” and also explains why the update "improves communication with 3G networks".

The sooner everybody is running 2.0.2 software the better things will be. Having seen the graphs the 2.0.2 software has already started to make difference."

“The update controlled the UMTS power control in the phone. Each iPhone requires a small amount of power from the transmitter and that power is requested by the phone itself. If too many phones ask for too much power at once, the transmitter starts shutting down, resulting in dropped calls. The iPhone 3G was asking for too much power and, in 2.0.2, has been fixed to stop requesting that power so often.”

Blogger Starts Following Followers

Google Blogger has started a following feature and now there is a new widget to add to your blogs to show off the number of followers you have. As Google gradually rolls out the feature, your blogging activities are getting more integrated.

Blogger Followers By following your blog, your readers tell the world they're a fan of your blog. Your Dashboard will show how many followers your blogs has and with a click on the Followers icon, you can browse your followers, see what blogs they write, and read the other blogs they're following. I have been using this feature in Tumblr (which hosts our photoblog), but this is on a much larger scale.

You can show off your followers by adding the Followers gadget to your blog's sidebar. From the "Layout | Page Elements" tab, click "Add a Gadget" and select "Followers" from the gadgets list. Its also integrated with Google Reader, and you can now see a special folder in Reader called "Blogs I'm Following" with subscriptions for all of the blogs you follow!

Well I dont’ see the feature activated on my dashboard yet, but they assure us that the Following feature is being rolled out to all over the next few weeks…

Google 404 Widget Enhances Custom 404 Pages

Google wants to help webmasters optimize their 404 Pages and help visitors get a better experience by browsing around your site rather than leaving it. Try the Google 404 widget and enhance your 404 pages.

As I was navigating my Google Webmasters tools, I found a new experimental feature under Tools called Enhance 404 pages. Usually when a user clicks a link to a page that’s no longer available, your server returns a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Site owners and webmasters create custom 404 pages to help visitors find related content on your site. Wordpress bloggers can easily create a custom 404 page.

Now webmasters can add the Google 404 widget to the custom 404 page. The 404 widget automatically provides helpful suggestions instead of error messages such as a search box for your site with appropriate search suggestions and tries to provide alternatives to incorrect URLs. Now visitors can easily find the information they need and will stay on your site longer generating more pageviews for you. See the widget at work below.

Simply cut and paste the code they provide into your 404 page template and enhance the page. This is a simple way for site owners to get a more functional 404 page. Since the widget is an experimental feature, they currently don’t provide closest match, alternative URL and sitemap suggestions for all sites.

We pasted the code on our site and it worked very well on the 404 page. But the closest match, alternative URL and sitemap suggestions were not there for our site. If you are looking to design some cool 404 pages, check out these cool 404 designs and then get more 404 ideas.
