A First Look at Ella: Is She a Speakcheesy or Not? You Decide!
In what has to be the most impressive airing out of bar space since Gin Mill disinfected the Village Idiot’s former home, the team behind GalleryBar and Plan B has completely gutted Julep, keeping only the chandeliers, and is poised to open Ella there on October 1. You’ll remember this is the bar we worried would be a “speakcheesy,” but owner Darren Rubell assures us he's as tired of that trope as we are. “We wanted to capture the other side of 1920s,” he told us. “The glamour, decadence — all those things associated with Hollywood at the time.” To that end his partner, Jordan Boyd, got his uncle Carleton Varney... Tables Available at Pera Mediterranean Brasserie and Trestle on Tenth; Allen & Delancey and the Harrison Mostly Booked
It’s 4 p.m., and that means it’s time to play Two for Eight. We just asked ten restaurants the best time they can squeeze a couple in for dinner; you need only make your chosen reservation. (As always, we make the calls but don’t guarantee the results.) Today: Refined Meathead. Read More »
Will Edible Art Give ‘Artsy Fartsy’ a New Meaning?
Saturday night at 3rd Ward, thirteen "food artists" will serve their work at the Last Supper multimedia festival, an offspring of a barbecue (the summer's last) that Coralina Meyers threw for her artist friends a few years ago. This year's concept is Landscape so expect bread rocks from Tattfoo Tan, organically sculpted chocolate by pastry chef Kat Korba, and the disturbingly lifelike sugar-cast syringes of Eve + Bowie. While Meyers stresses that no one should come to gorge, there's some real food too. Lamb, rice, and grilled vegetables will be served on her steel sculpture resembling the scales of justice. And if that's too deep, a dance party follows! The... Read More »
A First Look at Lucky Strike Lanes, Midtown's New Big-Ass Bowling Alley
Unless you're a hotel concierge looking for a new playpen to put folks into, you probably don't care that the opening of Lucky Strike Lanes has been delayed till September 28. Then again, maybe we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss this place as strictly for the tourists — whodathunk Spotlight Live would bring a celeby hip-hop crowd when it first opened, plus PR is being handled by Noah Tepperberg's own Strategic Group. So let's have a look at the place, shall we? There is some serious Technicolor action going on here. That, at least, is pure Disney. Long Island Restaurant Serves Chili The Way Barack Likes It
Yesterday the AP told us that Barack Obama really likes pie. Now the Rein Bar & Bistro of Garden City, Long Island, tells us that in honor of the upcoming presidential debate at Hofstra, it’ll offer, from October 11 to 18, a $34.95 prix fixe dinner based on the candidates’ supposed favorite dishes (awww, cute). That means Obama’s “personal chili recipe,” Alaskan king crab nacho stacks, and McCain baby back ribs. No moose meat on the menu (Kim Severson has more on “tundra cuisine” today), and we’re thinking Obama Waffles won’t be offered for dessert.
What a Drag: Lucky Cheng’s May Leave East Village for Times Square
In an interview with Lucky Cheng’s owner Hayne Suthon, Steve Lewis says he may have found her a space in Times Square, which means the tranny dive may eventually take its new “Cougars, Cubs, and Drag Queens, Oh My” party out of the East Village. Now that Dirty Delta might be gone, Time Out is totally going to have to take back that stuff about the East Village having the best bar scene. [Good Night Mr. Lewis, parts one and two]
Fresh’s New Chef, Michael Ferraro, Freshens Up the Menu
Fresh's new overseer, Enrico Bessone (formerly of the Maritime Hotel and Coffee Shop), has installed a new executive chef, Michael Ferraro, who was most recently chef de cuisine at the Patina Group (Sea Grill, Nick + Stef's, Brasserie, Brasserie 8 1/2), and before then an executive sous chef at Gary Robbins's Biltmore Room, and before that, a chef de partie at the fish station at Mercer Kitchen. Ferraro is touting his product as, well, fresh, of course — his blue prawns, bigeye tuna, and kona kampachi, for instance, are overnighted from Hawaii. We’re adding the fall menu to our database, but in the meantime you can see it here. Read More »
Beatrice Denied at CB Meeting; McNally, Carmellini, and Travertine Get the Nod
Eater and the Observer stopped in to last night’s full Community Board 2 meeting and, as at any carnival, there were winners and losers: The Beatrice Inn was given an Angelo Bianchi–like “sorry, it’s not going to happen tonight” by the board, which wasn’t happy about the fact that it promised to be a piano bar only to become the best piano bar EVER. Flyers around the neighborhood also succeeded in sinking that sports bar at 180 Lafayette we told you about, but there were some winners, too. Read More »
Sarah Palin Is (on a Piece of) Toast; Will Sushi Go Sustainable?

• A piece of toast bearing the likeness of Sarah Palin is up for auction on eBay through tomorrow. Current bidding price: $12,100. Seriously. [Slashfood]

• You know that statistic people like to throw around about food traveling 1,500 miles from farm to plate on average? Well, it turns out that's only partially correct, and it really only applies to you if you live in Chicago. [Slate]

• At last, it seems there may be hope that sushi chefs will start focusing on using sustainable species of fish rather than continuing to destroy the environment left and right. [Gourmet]

• The Observer continues its recent list-making mania with this fairly... Read More »

Faux-stalgia
Andrew Hearst isn’t the only one pained to see that RESTAURANT sign come down. Eater captions a photo: “Disgrace: the awesome old signage above Double Crown, being destroyed on Sat afternoon.” Reality check: “You bozos are not from the nabe," writes a commenter. "These signs are circa 1998; which replaces The Astor Restaurant circa 1996, a Balthazar knockoff.” Okay, so Keith McNally definitely won't be buying them. [Eater]
