  Inside: This Week in Autos
You know the auto industry is in bad shape when even mighty Toyota needs to slash its sales outlook. This week President Katsuaki Watanabe said the company now expects to sell 9.7 million vehicles in 2009, down from a previous figure of 10.4 million. Still, as Tokyo correspondent Ian Rowley points out that would be 200,000 higher than 2008 and highlighted the growing importance of emerging markets to the company's long-term growth plans. Speaking of emerging markets, it is now appearing likely that Chrysler will shop its high-performance Viper marque. Possible buyers include foreign auto companies looking to add a sexy halo car to its line up. Elsewhere this week we looked at the most leased cars in the U.S. and, surprise, discovered they are all luxury imports, and blogged about the ongoing delay of bringing Mahindra and Mahindra pickups to the U.S. market. Last, we reviewed the truly awe-inspiring Chevy Corvette ZR1, which proves that America really can build a world-class supercar.

IN YOUR FACE: THE FUTURE OF PUBLISHING

Reader Thad McIlroy Writes:

"There's no harm in eBooks per se, but to imagine that they represent anything like the salvation of the future of book publishing is techno-optimism at it's most extreme."

If there is a concern among executives at Mahindra, and U.S. distributor Global Vehicles, it is the continuing high price of diesel in the U.S. All of Mahindra's vehicles are diesels, and expected to get around 30 mpg. Diesel today, nationally, is about $4.15 per gallon on average, compared with $3.69 for gasoline. closequote
