WES DOWNLOADABLE NOW
Microsoft's newest embedded operating system is now available in a free
120-day evaluation edition. The company has released a downloadable
version of Windows Embedded Standard (WES) 2009, and provided a new
video demonstrating some of the product's key features.

MICROSOFT NIXES EMBEDDED VISTA
Microsoft will forsake its unloved Windows Vista codebase for the next
generation of its premier, x86-based embedded operating system. The
future Windows Embedded Standard, codenamed "Quebec," will be based on
the forthcoming Windows 7 instead, says Kevin Dallas (left), general
manager of Microsoft's Windows Embedded business.

MICROSOFT LAUNCHES WINDOWS CE CONTEST
Microsoft announced $50,000 in prizes for a contest challenging
students, academics, and hobbyists to envision the "home of the future"
using Windows CE. The "Sparks Will Fly" contest includes a giveaway of
50 Via Artigo computers, and culminates in a $15,000 grand prize.

MICROSOFT DELIVERS .NET MF UPGRADE
Microsoft has released a new version of its development environment for
deeply embedded systems. Now being promoted by a "Dare to Dream
Different" contest, .NET Micro Framework 3.0 includes a new filesystem,
touchscreen support, WiFi, USB, and a variety of added hardware support.

SEVEN-INCH TABLET RUNS WINDOWS CE
Chinese OEM BF Evergreen has announced a 21-ounce tablet PC that runs
Windows CE 5.0. The "7010A" includes a 400MHz Samsung processor, a
seven-inch display with 800 x 480 resolution, 128MB of RAM, 1GB of flash
storage, and an SD expansion slot.

WINDOWS MOBILE GPS PHONE COVERS BRAZIL
Brazilian carrier Elef has announced a compact phone based on the
Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. The "Touche" includes a 2.8-inch
touchscreen display, 416MHz PXA270 processor, two megapixel camera,
WiFi, Bluetooth, MicroSD slot, and a GPS system with map data for Brazil.

DELL NETBOOK USES MID-SIZED ATOM
Dell announced a netbook that breaks from the herd by using a Intel Z5xx
Atom CPU and 12-inch display. The Inspiron Mini 12 includes a 60GB or
80GB HDD (hard disk drive), 1GB of RAM, webcam, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g
wireless networking, and runs Windows Vista.

HP NETBOOK JOINS ATOM STAMPEDE
HP announced a netbook sporting a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor and, in a
Vivienne Tam edition, painted trees on its lid. The HP Mini 1000
features an 8.9-inch or 10.2-inch display, plus 60GB hard drive or SSD
(solid state disk) storage up to 16GB.

NETBOOK OVERCLOCKS TO 2GHZ
MSI has released a downloadable BIOS updgrade for its Wind netbook. The
new BIOS, version 1.09, is said by MSI to fix some keyboard issues, and
to provide faster booting, but it also allows the device to be
overclocked by up to 25 percent, according to third-party reports.

DELL SPINS DUAL-CORE THIN CLIENT
Dell has announced a device billed as the company's first-ever thin
client design. The Optiplex FX160 has single-core Atom 230 or dual-core
Atom 330 processors, up to 4GB of RAM, an optional 2.5-inch hard disk
drive, gigabit Ethernet port, and available 802.11b/g wireless
networking.

ARM TIPPED FOR NETBOOKS
Netbooks using ARM's high-end "Cortex A" family of processor cores will
begin appearing soon, a senior executive at the firm is reported as
saying. Rob Coombs, ARM's director of mobile solutions, says to "expect
announcements in the next few month."

MICROSOFT REVENUES REMAIN BUOYANT
Microsoft reported record revenue for the first quarter of its 2009
fiscal year. Defying the overall economy, plus an apparent drag on
Windows profits caused by low-cost "netbooks," revenue topped $15.06
billion, for a 9 percent year-over-year increase, while operating income
was $6 billion.
