Technorati Engage Ad Network for Blogs and Social Media Sites

Posted: 08 Dec 2008 10:14 AM PST

Bloggers can now attract advertisers via the Technorati Engage Ad Network, a self-service advertising network for blogs and social media sites. Though still in beta, it has opened its doors for business.

They allow publishers to sell basically 3 types of ads - Text Ads with a text headline and description, PhoText Ads consist of a headline and a description with a small thumbnail associated with them (sizes 100×100, 75×75, or 50×50 pixels) and Square Button Ads of standard 125×125 pixel image. In case of unsold space, targeted CPC (RON) ads will run. See terms and publisher FAQ for more information.

However, the revenue split is less attractive at 60/40 with the blogger earning only 60% of the deal. We use BuySellAds to advertise on QOT which has a better 75/25 share. I wonder why a new network would keep such a high commission ratio, unless they have a lot of advertisers with deep pockets signed up.

Technorati Engage is progressing well but only time will tell how successful it will be. After all how many ad networks can bloggers support on one blog, and having too many “Advertise here” or “Your Ad here” boxes makes any blog look unprofessional.

Will Readers Pay to Support Ad-Free Sites?

Posted: 08 Dec 2008 09:34 AM PST

Ask any blog reader and they will tell you that they hate ads on websites. But are readers willing to pay to fund their favorite sites to go ad-free?

Though it seems reasonable to assume that readers would be willing to pay a small fee to support an ad-free favorite site, the answer seems far from true. Mike Vorhaus has the answers to this question on Advertising Age

When we asked consumers if they would pay $39.99 a year, which comes out to less than $4 a month, for an ad-free version of one of their favorite sites, only 2.4% said definitely yes, they would be likely to do so. And only 3.5% said they’d be very likely. In fact, 84% of the people said they’d be unlikely or not at all likely. At the lower price of $29.99 a year, or less than $3 a month, only another 1.9% of consumers said they would be very likely to pay for an ad-free version.

Advertising is a major source of income for most websites. Now readers have got so used to seeing ads on websites, that ad blindness sets in and they don’t mind seeing ads (except when publishers have more ads than content). So why should they pay to read free content, while the publisher earns a few ad dollars to support the site and publish the content.

Though most feeds are also getting cluttered by ads, many sites still have ad-free RSS feeds and regular readers prefer this reading mode (here are some videos about what is RSS). I noticed many publishers are switching to services like The Deck, which will only display maximum one high paying ad only.

Microsoft Live Search Contest: Roll Double 6 to Win

Posted: 07 Dec 2008 07:15 PM PST

Microsoft Live Search is running a contest in India called WinWithSearch where they encourage you to use Live search and win prizes by simply rolling a double 6 on automated dice rolling on top of the search screen.

Well I tried a lot of searches, but could not manage a double 6.

But apparently someone did get the double 6

And after that you had to wait for the next 10 minutes for the cycle to finish before you could roll again. This was the bad part. Net users are impatien.

But then you might wait that much to earn free talktime for your mobile phone. The Contest will run from December 04, 2008 to January 03, 2009 and is open for 18 hrs a day from 0700 hrs IST to 0100 hrs IST during the Contest Period and valid in India only.

The prizes are Oxigen cash vouchers worth INR 100 for both the dice roll and the random prize and Cafe Coffee day vouchers for the 5 best slogans everyday that come through a completely filled feedback form. See the contest terms for more information. Search to win.
