January 29, 2009
Grub Street Digest: Today's Headlines
Will Timberlake Show Chelsea Some Southern Hospitality?
Justin Timberlake’s barbecue spot, Southern Hospitality, has been scouting for a second location for some time now, and by the looks of a Community Board 4 agenda, it may have its eyes on 765 Sixth Avenue between 24th and 25th Streets. Read More »

It's time to play Two for Eight. We just asked ten restaurants the best time they can squeeze a couple in for dinner; you need only make your chosen reservation. (As always, we make the calls but don't guarantee the results.) Today: High Italian. Read More »
Monkey Town Pairs Venison With Videos
We kind of love this: After throwing a “swamp dinner” that included snails, turtle, and rattlesnake, the dreamers at Monkey Town are hosting a “forest dinner” this Friday and Saturday. Chef Ryan Jaronik’s gamy six courses (incorporating rabbit, quail, venison, elk, and wild boar) will be paired with music videos on three large screens. Read More »
Good Dumpling House Censors Most Amazing Sign in Chinatown
Like the Victorians giving a cast of Michelangelo’s David the fig-leaf treatment, the Good Dumpling House has lamentably covered up the poster of its Queen’s Chicken, named after “one of the most beautiful women in Chinese history.” We’re told the new signage advertises Chinese New Years trinkets and does not translate to “NSFW.” Read More »
Take Home Scores Private-Label Wine for Cheap
The strip club Scores may be gone, but a remnant of its bacchanalian spirit lives on. Leftover bottles of Scores private-label blanc de blancs special cuvée have turned up at Warehouse Wines & Spirits (735 Broadway, at Astor Pl.; 212-982-7770), and at $7.99 a pop, the insouciant little wine might be better described as a recession-special cuvée. Obama Reaches Out to Locavores, Drunks
The Obamas are putting their family chef, Sam Kass, to work with current White House chef Cristeta Comerford. Kass put in time at Avec in Chicago before founding a private chef service that prides itself on serving “clean, healthy food” sourced “mainly from local farms.” Mmmmkay, Alice Waters? Read More »

Adam Platt: ‘I Thought Top Chef Was Supposed to Be About New York?’
In last night’s episode of Top Chef, Scott Conant judged a Quickfire that incorporated horse food and then the cheftestants went up against their predecessors Josie, Spike, Andrew, Nikki, Camille, and Miguel in head-to-head, twenty-minute cook-offs of dishes inspired by NFL teams. Contrived? Definitely. And even Colicchio admitted that the culinary students who judged them voted based on personality. But the episode did have some moments of truth. Read More »
What to Eat and Drink at Simon Sips
It looks like Simon Sips Café is up and running, per a spot inspection. You’ll remember this is a midtown transplant, with owner Simon Mammon operating the La Marzocco espresso machine and chef Ronna Welsh designing the Greenmarket menu, which follows. Funny how she describes the olives as having the “slightest bit of anchovy.” Come on now, chef — be loud and proud about that undersung fish! Read More »
Vietnamese Pop-up Café May Be a Cure for the Mondays
Could the one-day-a-week restaurant become a trend? (Actually, in addition to Frugal Fridays, Craft is trying out Thrifty Thursdays this week, too.) An Nguyen Xuan, a Vietnamese chef who was born and raised in France, tells us that every Monday, she’s taking over relative newcomer Simple Café in Williamsburg and operating it as Bep (meaning “Kitchen” in Vietnamese): “I serve Vietnamese staple dishes like pho, bánh mì, bun, and fried spring rolls.” Read More »
