2. Preparing for Practice

Practice is preparation for the game. But how do you practice? Are you ready for the season? Chris Carter is back with hit tip, "Preparing for Practice".

With the baseball season now in full swing, at least here in the south, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about coaches being prepared for practice. Preparing your practice plan shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. As coaches we need to get away from the idea of a good practice consisting of infield/outfield, batting practice, and base running. This is okay to do from time to time, but every practice with this set up becomes boring and kids begin to lose interest in baseball.

I believe practicing fundamentals is very important; we can do this every practice but put a twist on it so it doesn't become repetitive. Fielding ground balls is a great fundamental to practice, but what about teaching the pitchers to cover first base when there is a ground ball hit to the first baseman? How about turning double plays? Even at a younger level, turning double plays is something that should at least be introduced. Having played in the Baltimore Orioles system for a couple of years, I remember hearing Cal Ripken Jr say, "turning a ground ball double play is nothing more than a catch, a throw, a catch, a throw, and a catch." Turning the double play is now a lot easier to start teaching, it can also be fun! Outfielders can practice catching fly balls; this is another fundamental that becomes very boring. An example to make it more fun and productive is to let the players learn to catch the fly ball hit over their heads. Maybe even let them practice the sliding or diving catch.

Batting practice is always important. Make it productive, instead of one hitter hitting 15 pitches and then bringing in the next hitter, turn it into a game. There can be several hitters ready to go, the hitters can take 5 swings and the 6th swing becomes live for the fielders. ! If you h ave assistant coaches, setting up multiple hitting stations always helps keeping the kids moving. A good drill is soft-toss with wiffle golf balls; it makes the kids work on their eye hand coordination. The less standing around in batting practice, the better.

If we as coaches have a plan before we go to practice, our team will start to understand that practice is now preparation. When we are prepared, then when the game comes, our players will be ready. Good luck this season, and remember to have fun!

4. This Month's Trivia

Remember in the movie Major League when Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) came out of the bullpen the song "Wild Thing" was played and the crowd went wild? I know you remember the Indians fictitious broadcaster Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker).
In real life Bob Uecker is the play-by-play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers, who this year signed all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman played 16 of his 17 previous years in the bigs for the Padres. As was customary during his entrance to the game, on the night of 09/23/2006 against the Pirates Hoffman entered from the bullpen in San Diego (and into the record books) to his own anthem, like Rick Vaughn.
The question is, do you know the tune to which Trevor Hoffman is introduced when he is called in to save a ballgame?
I wonder if they'll continue that tradition in Milwaukee?
