2nd Street Annie's
628 N Front St, at Fairmount, Northern Liberties
When the experts deliver their knowledge to the masses,
magic happens: Stephen Hawking's Brief History made it
possible for laymen to get physics, while Fred McGriff's
sweet Tom Emanski vids made baseball a snap for pretty much
anybody -- even Stephen Hawking. Schooling you in the art of
festive jackassery, 2nd Street Annie's.
Relocated from Wildwood, Annie's is run by third-gen mummer
Frank Passio, a public-shamelessness expert who's created an
environment ripe for patrons to shame themselves, vaudeville
style: bar-to-ceiling brass poles (dancing's neither
encouraged nor discouraged), a century of mummer
paraphernalia, promo slicks of Jolson and Valentino, antique
cigarette vending machines, and the bar's mainstay, dueling
pianos. Electric keyboards retrofitted into fused baby grand
shells on a step-rise stage, the pianos'll play weekend host
to ivory-ticklers banging out singalongs from Runaround Sue
and American Pie to Southern Cross and Sweet Home Alabama,
whipping the audience into a frenzy of inspired idiocy not
seen in the 215 since...Tuesday lunch. Intensifying the
mayhem, DJs bark out hourly drink specials determined by
bingo-style drawings of ping-pong balls bearing Sharpied
messages like "$2 domestic bottles", "$3 Guinness drafts",
"$3 you-call-it", and "bartender's choice" (pray he doesn't
pick "$20 wells, everybody!").
Completing Annie's "Eat Well, Sing Much, Drink Often" motto,
there're rotating food specials, plus staple sandwiches like
corned beef, roast pork, and sausage & peppers. Future plans
include opening the second-floor "Tramp Bar", whose larger
stage string bands'll grace – and while the assumption that
that kind of entertainment'll prove popular might seem
confounding, you never did get String Theory.
