Intel commissioned a study on the true cost of a lost or stolen laptop to an enterprise. The Ponemon Institute put the average price at nearly $50,000, with extreme cases nearing $1 million. The study offered a backdrop to Intel Anti-Theft technology, on the Intel Centrino Pro platform.

Oracle to Lay Off Thousands of Sun Workers?
News reports indicate that Oracle might cut thousands of Sun Microsystems jobs after it finalizes its acquisition of the software and systems maker. Although Sun had already pledged to cut up to 6,000 of its 33,000 employees from its work force, some observers said the actual number of jobs cut could be much higher.

IBM Plans Cloud Computing Services for 2009
IBM is planning to launch a new type of cloud computing service later this year that will put Big Blue in more direct competition with Google, Amazon, Salesforce.com and Microsoft. This new service is aimed at developers who want to write applications that work in the cloud.

Broadcom Launches Bid for Emulex
Chip maker Broadcom claims the $764 million all-cash offer is not a hostile takeover bid, despite a lawsuit to block a poison pill provision and a not-so-friendly letter to Emulex's board. Broadcom wants Emulex for its technology used in transporting information from data centers to storage systems.
