MICROSOFT SPINS EMBEDDED SERVER OS
Microsoft announced an embedded operating system targeting servers,
plus an online service providing developers with drivers and other
updates. "Windows Embedded Server" and the cloud-based service
offerings were announced at the Embedded Systems Conference by Windows
Embedded General Manager Kevin Dallas.

OPERA PREPS NEW BROWSER FOR WINDOWS PHONES
Opera Software has announced a new version of its web browser for
Windows Mobile devices. Opera Mobile 9.7 will feature the Opera Turbo
compression technology, plus improved support for Flash, AJAX
(asynchronous JavaScript and XML), and Google Gears, says Opera.

FORD TRUCKS HAVE WINDOWS ON BOARD
Ford says it is now shipping trucks and vans with in-dash, Windows CE
computers. The available "Ford Work Solutions" system includes an
in-dash touchscreen computer, an RFID-based asset tracking system,
broadband Internet access, and real-time transmission of vehicle
location and maintenance information, Ford says.

WINDOWS E-READER REPLACING DETROIT "PAPER BOYS"
A Windows CE-based electronic reader will replace home newspaper
delivery for readers in Detroit. The Detroit Media Partnership and
Plastic Logic announced that the latter's e-reader, which measures 8.5
x 11 inches and has a touchscreen "e-ink" display, will be available to
subscribers next year.

WINDOWS MID DOES WIMAX
Samsung has announced a MID (mobile internet device) that runs Windows
Mobile 6.1 and includes built-in WiMAX networking. The SWD-M100 "Mondi"
has a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS,
three megapixel camera, an HDMI port, and 4GB of storage, the company
says.

MICROSOFT TOUTS REFUNDABLE MOBILE APPS
Ahead of a Thursday keynote at the CTIA Wireless show, Microsoft
released new details of its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and
touted growing industry support. Users purchasing applications through
the company's online store will have 24 hours to obtain a full refund,
says Microsoft.

FLASH SOFTWARE MAKES WINDOWS MOBILE "100 TIMES FASTER"
Datalight has announced a flash memory media manager and file system
for Windows Mobile that are touted as making performance "100 times
faster." The FlashFX Pro flash manager and Reliance Nitro file system
replace Microsoft's native equivalents, providing greater reliability
and faster performance, the company says.

NEW INTERFACE STANDARDS DEBUT
The Small Form Factor Special Interest Group (SFF-SIG) announced a
rugged, form-factor-independent, COM (computer-on-module) interface
standard called COMIT. The organization also announced an upgraded
revision 1.3 of its SUMIT interface standard, adding more PCIe lanes,
and announced the availability of its MiniBlade 1.0 storage spec.

HTC PHONE HAS SPECIAL EMAIL KEYS
HTC has announced a non-touchscreen Windows phone with a special "Inner
Circle" key for managing email. The "Snap" includes a QWERTY keyboard,
a "jog ball," 2.4-inch display, a two megapixel camera, and HSPA (high
speed packet access) connectivity, the company says.

ASUS NETBOOK INCLUDES OPTICAL DRIVE
Asus has announced a netbook that includes an integral optical disk
drive. The Eee PC 1004DN has an Intel Atom N280 processor, a 10-inch
display, a 120GB hard disk drive, up to 2GB of RAM, and weighs 3.19
pounds with a six-cell battery, Asus says.
