Friendly Toast

Sure 7-11's great when you want to sit on your couch at 4am,
shaming yourself in front of God via Easy Cheese, but what
about when you want to late-night shame yourself in front of
other people? For those times, hit Friendly Toast, opening
this weekend.
The Kendall Square spinoff of the cult Portsmouth favorite,
FT's Fri/Sat 24-hr, 150-seat full-service diner featuring a
22-seat bar, front lounge, and two dining areas adorned w/
lime green walls, hunter green vinyl seats and booths, and
an exquisite overload of kitsch art, vintage Levi's posters,
old ice cream truck menus, and a statue of what's probably
Mayor McCheese's brother. The menu's a sauced man's nirvana
w/ 9oz Hereford beef burgers (cheddar, avocado & olive
garlic spread, bleu cheese w/ fried onion strings) and a
crazy range of sandwiches like the Mexican Melt (cayenne
cheddar, marinated chicken, avocado-lime sauce), The Gooey
(pressed tortilla w/ bbq, cheese, onion-smothered roast
beef), and the cayenne cheddar bread/American &
cheddar/olive garlic spread/side o' strawberry habenero
dipping sauced Damn Good Grilled Cheese -- a name that
doesn't do nearly enough to distinguish it from other
grilled cheeses. To break your fast, they've got poached
Green Eggs and Ham w/ herb sauce, plus other egg scrambles
like the Sunrise (corn chips, jalapeno-jack cheese, roasted
corn salsa), Sklarmageddon (sausage, bacon, ham, red chile
pecans, jalapeno-jack, and Swiss), and the goat
cheese/asparagus/bacon New Hampshire's Finest, obviously not
sworn to protect and serve against bad pee smell.
If you're a nosher, they've also got apps like
Guinness-Battered Onion Rings, Cheesy Fries, and Spinach
Dip, and plan on adding four more pages to the menu a week
from now, which will reveal the ultimate shame -- you never
learned to read!
