TIA'S TIPS
Multiple Sclerosis affects approximately 350,000-500,000 people in the United States
and 2.5 million worldwide.[1] Usually diagnosed between the ages of 25-40, it affects
twice as many women as men. Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a progressive and degenerative
disorder of the central nervous system. The central nervous system includes the
brain, spinal cord and the optic nerve. The word sclerosis refers to the 'hardening
of tissue', and multiple indicates and refers to a variety of regions of tissue
'hardening'.[2] This disorder is characterized by multiple areas of inflammation
and scarring of the myelin sheaths in the brain and spinal cord. Made primarily
of phospholipids (fats) and protein, myelin sheaths are the naturally occurring
insulation that protect and insulate nerve fibers throughout the body. When inflammation
and scarring occur, nerve communication to and from the brain and spinal cord is
distorted or interrupted. Therefore, depending on the location and extent of the
scarring, a person with MS experiences varying degrees of neurological impairment.[3]
Some of the most common symptoms of MS and myelin sheath damage are dizziness, extreme
fatigue, loss of balance and coordination, blurred or double vision, numbness or
tingling especially in the hands and feet, loss of arm or leg strength, difficulty
speaking and slurred speech, paralysis and problems with thinking, concentration,
memory and judgment.[4] Secondary symptoms that often arise as a result of the primary
symptoms and decreased mobility are bone loss, muscle degeneration, urinary tract
infections, and weak respiration.[5]
MS typically follows a pattern of periodic flare-ups called exacerbations. These
are usually followed by periods of remission where the symptoms may diminish or
disappear altogether. The individual condition of MS can be relatively mild with
only a few minor attacks spread over many years. Or, MS can be a rapidly occurring
and completely disabling disease. It is common for the progression to be slow and
disappear for periods of time. But often, MS returns with a vengeance and progressively
more severe attacks.[6]
Although there are several theories, the specific cause or causes of MS have not
yet been determined. MS may be an autoimmune disease where, for unknown reasons,
the body's immune system attacks normal body tissue. In MS, the body attacks the
cells that make myelin. One theory as to the reason for this is that it appears
to be the case that common viruses may play a role in the actual cause of MS. If
this is so, MS may be caused by a chronic viral infection or by an immune system
breakdown due to a viral infection. This can take place in the central nervous system
itself or somewhere else in the body at large.[7] It has been suspected for some
time that a lack of sunshine, which is the primary way we get our vitamin D, may
play a role in the development of MS. Higher incidences of MS have been found in
the Northern temperate zones of North America and Europe, known for their cloudy
days.[8] It appears that there is a gene that is activated by vitamin D that may
not function properly in people who get too little sunlight. Stress and malnutrition
from poor diet or poor absorption often precede the onset of MS and are thought
to be a possible cause. Some doctors believe that food allergies are a major factor
in the development and progression of MS. Heredity also may be a factor. In addition,
many experts believe that mercury poisoning could be behind many cases of MS. Mercury
has been shown to cause cellular distortion and inhibited cellular function. The
levels of mercury in people with MS have been found to be seven times higher than
those of healthy individuals.[9]
In autoimmune diseases, our immune systems are activated and directed against the
body's own proteins. Certain proteins, called self-proteins, are actually produced
by the body itself. When our immune systems misidentify self-proteins as foreign
or potentially harmful to us, it can direct itself toward eliminating them. This
includes self-proteins produced within our systems as well as protein we may eat
that appears to be similar in make-up to the protein the body produces itself.
This misapplication of our immune responses toward vital aspects of our systems
compromises our basic capacity to function. It is believed that one of the most
important strategies for halting detrimental autoimmune reactions is to eliminate
the consumption of foods which contain proteins that mimic self-proteins.These foods
include all dairy products, all legumes (beans, lentils and peanuts), eggs, yeast
and all grains. The most problematic grains contain gluten. These include wheat,
spelt, kamut, barley, rye and oats.[10] Interestingly, these are most of the top
allergenic foods.
Some doctors recommend having yourself tested for food allergies. They believe that
early detection is vital and that eliminating the offending foods from your diet
will help you avoid further damage before it may be irreversible. Other possible
offenders for MS are alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, fried foods, refined foods, and
most sugars - particularly normally processed sugar. Some of the best foods shown
to be beneficial for MS are: blueberries, cherries, blackberries, and grapes. These
fruit contain plant chemicals called proanthocyanidins that are known to strengthen
the blood brain barrier and help keep the brain healthy. Other beneficial foods
for MS are dark leafy green vegetables, turmeric, ginger, cilantro, raw nuts, especially
almonds and walnuts, wild salmon and sardines.

ROBERT RECOMMENDS
One of the most basic and important protocols for MS is to improve the nutritional
biochemistry of the body.[11] Vitamin D not only plays a huge role in our immune
system, it is essential for proper mineral balance. This is most importantly due
to its control and use of calcium in the body, which is critical to the nervous
system.[12] Vitamin D, which is commonly known as the "sunshine vitamin", has demonstrated
that in most cases, people with myelin sheath degeneration are severely deficient
in vitamin D. The deficiencies of vitamin D and calcium seem to have major neurological
implications with MS.[13] Furthermore, a new study shows that those taking high
doses of vitamin D, about 14,000 IUs per day on average, prevented the frequent
relapses that occur with the disease. These high doses of vitamin D significantly
helped the patients in the study to maintain their current level of functioning
with virtually no adverse effects.[14] It is recommended to have your Physician
do regular vitamin D testing to confirm that vitamin D levels are in a therapeutic
and not the toxic range.[15]
The scientific research regarding autoimmune theories and MS have found our own
over-active immune systems identifying and attacking the body's healthy cells as
'foreign antigens'. Vitamin D may play a pivotal role in the control of inflammation
and its concurrent cellular damage. It appears that chemicals that modulate our
immune system response called cytokines are directly involved with this inflammation.
Vitamin D in turn acts as an anti-inflammatory.[16] When inflammation does occur
with MS, it usually strikes the areas of white matter in the central nervous system
in random patches called plaques. This is followed by the destruction of the protective
myelin sheaths.
The minerals magnesium, sodium, and potassium are also of vital importance to the
nervous system. Magnesium, sometimes referred to as the "nerve" mineral, has over
300 critical functions in the human body. An integral part of proper neuron function,
the minerals potassium and sodium work together with calcium in the healthy operating
of our "potassium channels" which control a variety of cell functions.[17] Also
important are the minerals zinc and selenium, which help strengthen the immune system
at large and help protect against viral infection in specific.[18] To achieve this
healthy mineral balance we recommend the consumption of organic vegetables and supplementation
with an organic whole food multi mineral that provides the essential minerals to
optimize healthy body chemistry. We recommend New Chapter Organics' Every Woman's
Mineral Complex, which is designed specifically for electrolyte balance and bone
support.
Vitamin D is not abundant in many of our easily available food choices, so we tend
to get most of our vitamin D from sun exposure and multivitamins. One problem with
this is that vitamin D from the sun is not a reliable source for everyone for a
number of reasons. The season, time of day, geography, latitude, level of air pollution,
color of the skin, the amount of healthy cholesterol we maintain, and age can all
affect the ability of our skin to produce vitamin D. Whatever the source of it,
it is important to understand that there are two forms of vitamin D - ergocalciferol
and cholecalciferol. These are commonly referred to as vitamin D2 and vitamin D3.
The form of Vitamin D found in most multivitamins is vitamin D2. Vitamin D2 is both
less potent than vitamin D3 as well as less capable of maintaining its usefulness
in our bodies over time.[19] High in cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3 , we highly
recommend one of the best forms of vitamin D, second only to the sun itself, called
Enzymatic Therapy's Vitamin D3.
Adequate B-vitamin intake is vitally important to the health of our nervous system
as well. In fact, vitamin B-12 is involved in the formation of the myelin sheath
itself. Deficiencies of vitamin B-12 have been found in the blood and cerebrospinal
fluid of people with demyelination. This is a condition exhibited by the loss of
the myelin sheath insulating the nerves which is commonly found in neurodegenerative
autoimmune diseases like MS. Folate and vitamin B12 are required nutrients because
they both are involved with neurotransmitter metabolism and help protect against
nerve damage itself. Furthermore, both folate and vitamin B12 deficiency may cause
similar neurological disturbances.[20] We always recommend and prefer organic whole
food nutrition for optimal health, and the same quality should apply to the optimal
multi-vitamin. The University of Maryland Medical Center, which specializes in MS
research, recommends a daily multiple vitamin that contains antioxidant vitamins
A, B, C, D, E, and the minerals, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and selenium.[21] New

Multi. This formulation is specifically designed with the finest whole food probiotic
vitamin B complex nutrients and additional herbs added to further help to reduce
stress and support the nervous system.
One of the most reputable contemporary health experts, Dr. Andrew Weil is best known
for establishing and popularizing the field of integrative medicine. His dietary
recommendations for MS are to eat organic food that are low-glycemic (do not spike
blood sugar) and are anti-inflammatory. He recommends the elimination of polyunsaturated
vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, and all partially hydrogenated
oils. As your main fats, Dr. Weil recommends the use of extra-virgin olive oil and
any good Omega-3 fatty acids. These good fats are critical to healthy neuron transmission.
They include most fish, walnuts, flax, avocados, hemp seeds and their oils. Dr.
Weil also stresses the importance of a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and herbs,
like berries, dark leafy greens, ginger and turmeric.[22] We recommend one of the
most convenient ways to fulfill some these recommendations in a capsule. We recommend
Neurozyme from New Chapter Organics! Neurozyme is a unique formulation of Omega-3
fish oil and a host of anti-inflammatory and neurotransmitter enhancing herbs; like
ginger, turmeric, rosemary, and ashwagandha. Not yet demonstrated in human trials,
researchers at Vanderbilt University have found that turmeric and its derivative
curcumin has actually been shown to block the progression of MS in animal studies.[23]
