ADENEO AND INTERVALZERO PROMOTE "SOFT-CONTROL" ARCHITECTURE
Adeneo Embedded and IntervalZero jointly announced a software/services product intended to help embedded OEMs transition their products to "soft-control" architectures. The "Soft-Control Accelerator" offering includes an IntervalZero RTX 2009 SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) SDK (software development kit), plus on-site service and one-year support, the companies said.

WINDOWS SATELLITE PHONE SERVICE TAKES OFF (LITERALLY)
TerreStar Corporation has launched the satellite that will power its dual-mode satellite/terestrial phone service, to be offered with Windows Mobile smartphones by the end of this year. ELECTRICITY METER RUNS WINDOWS, TALKS TO GOOGLE
The German utility company Yello Strom is now shipping a Windows CE-based electricity meter that allows customers to launch power consumption via a web page. The Sparzahler ("savings meter") can also transmit data to third-party energy management software such as Google's "Google PowerMeter," the companies say.

WINDOWS DEVICE IS TWO PHONES IN ONE
Indian carrier Spice Mobiles announced a Windows Mobile 6.0 phone claimed to be the country's first to operate in both GSM and CDMA modes. The Spice D-1111 has a 2.8-inch 320 x 240 display, two megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and microSD memory expansion, the company says.

MICROSOFT'S ONLINE STORE TO DEBUT WITH 600 WINDOWS MOBILE APPS
Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile will offer approximately 600 applications when it launches this fall, according to a company executive. The online applications store will offer a money-back guarantee and show customers only the software that's compatible with their device's display, the executive reportedly added.

SAMSUNG SHRINKS ARM11 APPLICATION PROCESSOR
Samsung is now sampling its first ARM 11-based application processor to be fabbed using 45-nanometer technology. Intended for Windows CE devices such as "next-generation PNDs," the S5P6440 runs at 533MHz or 667MHz, includes 2D graphics acceleration hardware, and features a DRAM memory controller, the company says.

WINDOWS CE-READY SOC INCLUDES LOW-POWER DSP
Texas Instruments (TI) is sampling three new digital signal processors (DSPs) touted as the lowest-power floating point DSPs in the industry. In addition to launching the TMS320C6742, TMS320C6746, and the SATA-enabled TMS320C6748, TI is sampling a Windows CE-compatible, ARM9-based OMAP-L138 system-on-chip (SoC) that incorporates the TMS320C6748, says the company.

WINDOWS MOBILE GETS FIREFOX MOBILE UPDATE
The Mozilla Foundation has released a new test version of its Firefox web browser for Windows Mobile. Still code-named "Fennec," the downloadable "Alpha 2" version includes "numerous bug fixes," better performance, and a "new shiny theme," according to Mozilla.

RUGGED HANDHELD OFFERS HIGH-SPEED, WIRELESS GALORE
Korean manufacturer Bluebird Soft entered the U.S. market with several Windows handhelds, including a high-end PDA with an 806MHz processor and a VGA-resolution display. The "BIP-6000" includes a 3.5-inch screen, three megapixel camera, 1D/2D barcode scanner, RFID reader, and a GSM cellular modem, the company says.

AMD: OUT OF THE NETBOOK CLOSET AT LAST
Acer's Gateway division has announced a netbook that appears to be the first such device to use an AMD processor. The Gateway LT3013u includes an 11.6-inch display, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard disk drive, and ATI Radeon X1270 graphics, according to the company.

HTC PREDICTS 50 PERCENT GROWTH IN U.S. BUSINESS
The head of HTC's U.S. business expects its U.S. business to grow by 50 percent this year, according to Reuters. The smartphone manufacturer has also reaffirmed its commitment to Windows Mobile, to which the company says its newly announced "HTC Sense" user interface will be ported.

The Sun-sponsored VirtualBox project has released a beta 3.0 version of its free, x86-oriented virtualization software. The Windows-compatible xVM VirtualBox 3.0 beta adds support for guest Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) with up to 32 virtual CPUs, as well as support for Windows 7, OpenGL 2.0 and Direct3D 8/9, among other features.
