Posted: 29 Aug 2009 08:49 PM PDT

We all know that you can use colored pencils to create art, but can a collection of colored pencils themselves be art?

Apparently so! Here’s a beautiful yet stunningly simple arrangement of 500 colored pencils by Felissimo for Social Designer, a website that aims to crowdsource designs for charity causes.

Designboom has the story:

designed by felissimo for social designer this complete set of 500 colored pencils consists of 20 units, each pencil telling its own story with a unique name.

you cannot buy the complete set of pencils all at once, but you can receive them over the course of 20 months.

four different display methods let you keep your pencils at hand, while being displayed either as an artwork, or kept aside as a special collection.

the cases have been designed especially for the 500 colored pencils and are available in a limited edition.

Study Shows Drinking Beer Improves Bone Density

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 07:51 PM PDT

Many studies have tried to link health benefits to moderate alcohol consumption.  Loss of bone density is a problem in women as they age, but beer has come to the rescue!

The study included surveys of women at various stages in life and found that those who regularly drank beer had higher bone density.

Fraternities across the country will surely try to promote kegs of beer as being good for you!

Scientists at the University of Extremadura in Caceres, Spain, conducted a study involving 1,697 healthy women, 811 of whom were postmenopausal while a further 176 were going through the menopause.

Participants were required to complete questionnaires, providing information on their smoking habits, as well as their levels of alcohol, caffeine and nutrient consumption.

The women also agreed to undergo ultrasound scans so that the density of their bones could be assessed.

The researchers found that participants who reported drinking beer on a regular basis tended to have greater bone density than those who did not drink beer or who tended to consume wine.

Bizarre Newt Uses Ribs as Weapons

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 07:43 PM PDT

The Spanish ribbed newt has a pretty bizarre defense mechanism – when attacked, it secretes poison and pushes out its ribs until they pierce its skin, creating a row of sharp bones that act like barbs:

The newt has to force its bones through its skin every time it is attacked, say scientists, who have described the form and function of the barbs in detail. [...]

When the newt becomes agitated or perceives a threat, it swings its ribs forward, increasing their angle to the spine by up to 50 degrees.

As it does this, the newt keeps the rest of its body still.

“The forward movement of the ribs increases the body size and stretches the skin to the point of piercing it,” says zoologist Egon Heiss of the University of Vienna in Austria.

The tips of the newt’s ribs then stick outside its body, like exposed spines.

A Walking Operation (The Game): Man Got Tattoos of Medical Equipments That Saved His Life

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 07:35 PM PDT

As a child, Matt spent a lot of time in hospitals – so as an adult, he decided to do an homage of sorts: he got tattoos of the various medical equipments that saved his life!

Helen J. Grose of Viceland blog has the interview:

Vice: What's with the medical equipment obsession?
Matt: I've always liked medical instruments, probably from spending a lot of time as a child in hospitals. I'm not scared of hospitals or their instruments.

Vice: What did you get first?
Matt: I got my diabetic tattoo before I went on holidays to Mexico to traipse around on donkeys. It says "I am an insulin dependent diabetic. If I seem drunk give me sugar."

Vice: How many instruments have you got?
Matt: I've got a tethoscope, reflex hammer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, forceps, a bone saw, oxygen mask, latex gloves, surgical string, skin grafting razor, trephine skull drill, a medical warning label, and a syringe.

The Spectacular Sea of Salt: Salar de Uyuni

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 07:15 PM PDT

The largest and highest salt flats in the world, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, has to be seen to be believed.  Quite an unearthly experience, your attention is first drawn to the mysterious mounds of sand that dot the landscape.  But that’s not all. Salar de Uyuni even has rock trees and a locomotive graveyard to boot.

You may not have heard of Uyuni, but our astronauts have. It is used as a target for calibrating and testing remotes sensing systems on satellites in orbit. Why? It is big – very big – and has an incredibly smooth surface which is highly reflective when it is covered in water, making it perfect for that task.

The Value of United States Currency in Circulation

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 06:59 PM PDT

Millions of US coins and bills are exchanged daily and billions of them are in circulation.  Visual Economics put together a great graphic to compare the values and number of currency in circulation, and even looked at how long each stays in circulation.

Would you have guessed there are almost 6 times as many $100 bills in circulation as there are $20 given that most ATMs use only $20s?  Would you have guessed the $5 bill has the shortest life expectency of any bill, or that there are 4 times as many pennies than any other coin?

The Suicidal Cows of Switzerland

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 06:31 PM PDT

A recent trend of cows leaping off the high mountain cliffs in the Swiss village of Lauterbrunnen has given rise to speculation. With no natural predators, locals are puzzled as to what could have spooked the cattle into jumping to their doom. Twenty eight cows have died in three days as police continue to investigate.

Are a few wild dogs or other critters spooking the cattle? Or have these cows turned suicidal because of a bad case of the blues?

‘We are investigating because cows growing up in the mountains normally can estimate dangers and do not plunge down cliffs.’

According to local reports, there had been violent thunderstorms in the area which may well have spooked the animals.

Cows do occasionally fall to their deaths in these Alpine regions although it is rare for so many to fall in one particular place.

There has been speculation in the past that when this does happen it is because a tightly-grouped number have followed each other as they search for more grass.

Eggshells are a wonder of nature. They are the perfect packaging for bird babies and the food they need. Eggshells are full of calcium. And they have a great many uses after you take the yolk and the white out. I put all my eggshells in the compost as a matter of habit. I didn't know they were also good for repelling bugs and deer, and I certainly have never thought of putting them in the coffee! Find twelve ways to use eggshells at The Daily Green. Link -via Digg
