TINY ATOM PC SPORTS HDMI PORT
Portwell is shipping a fanless, Intel Atom-based PC that uses less than seven Watts and measures just 4.5 x 4 x 1.05 inches. The WEBS-1010 includes a miniSD socket and a 2.5-inch disk bay, HDMI video output, an IR receiver, and six USB ports, the company says.

NO-CONTRACT CARRIER TO OFFER WINDOWS SMARTPHONE
The regional, no-contract wireless carrier MetroPCS will reportedly turn to Windows Mobile for its first-ever smartphone. The Samsung SCH-i220 messaging phone will include a QWERTY keyboard, two megapixel camera, and the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard operating system, according to the PhoneNews.com website.

ESC BOSTON TO FEATURE WINDOWS EMBEDDED STANDARD 2011?
TechInsights announced that attendees at next month's ESC (Embedded Systems Conference) Boston will be able to take home "design kits" that feature Intel Atom processors and the "Windows Embedded Standard 2011" operating system. The event will also include at least nine sessions devoted to Windows Embedded, the organizers say.

Wyse has introduced a pair of thin client devices that run Windows Embedded CE 6.0 or Windows XP Embedded. The C30LE and C90LE use less than seven Watts, optionally support dual monitors and internal wireless LAN adapters, and come with gigabit Ethernet ports, the company says.

WINDOWS PHONE INCLUDES BOTH X86 AND ARM CPUS
Korean company Miutech has announced a device claimed to squeeze an Atom-powered PC and a mobile phone into a single package. Sporting dual displays, the HDPC (hybrid dual portable computer) runs Windows XP on the Atom and Windows CE on an unspecified ARM processor, says Miutech.

FASTEST WINDOWS MOBILE BROWSER GETS FREE UPGRADE
Skyfire Labs announced an upgraded version of a Windows Mobile web browser claimed to make browsing on a smartphone "just like browsing on a PC." Skyfire 1.1 includes improved page load times, better mobile website support, page up/down shortcuts, plus updated Flash, Silverlight, and QuickTime plugins, the company says.

LENOVO OFFERS NETTOPS AND A HOME SERVER
Lenovo has launched two compact nettops with an Atom 230 processor, available Nvidia Ion graphics, and 160GB or 250GB hard drives. Meanwhile, the IdeaCentre D400 home server runs the Windows Home Server operating system and sports up to 8TB of storage, the company says.

MICROSOFT SOFTWARE TO EXTEND FEATURE PHONES' POWER
Microsoft has announced software that will allow feature phones to access service such as Twitter, Facebook, and Windows Live Messenger. The "OneApp" environment takes up only about 150K and allows the bulk of an application to reside in the cloud, according to the company.

NOKIA LAUNCHES WINDOWS NETBOOK
Nokia has announced a netbook that includes 3G broadband connectivity, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a 10.1-inch display. The "Booklet 3G" includes an Intel Atom N270 processor, an HDMI output, and 12-hour battery life, according to the company.

MICROSOFT PROPOSES WHITEFI FOR LOW-COST BROADBAND
Microsoft researchers have devised a way to offer low-cost, long-range wireless Internet via radio spectrum previously reserved for TV stations. The "WhiteFi" system could adaptively switch frequencies using a technique called SIFT (Signal Interpretation before Fourier Transform), the researchers say.

PCI EXPRESS WON'T SPEED UP UNTIL 2011
The PCI SIG has officially delayed the release of the PCI Express 3.0 specification until the second quarter of 2010. As a result, graphics cards and other products tapping into the new spec's 7.99GT/sec. (gigatransfers per second) bandwidth won't be released until 2011, according to industry reports.
