Research shows how anti-cancer drug works EVANSTON, Ill. (UPI) -- Researchers at Illinois' Northwestern University said they discovered how the drug tetrathiomolybdate, which is used to fight some metastatic cancers, works. Northwestern said in a release Thursday while it is known the drug can help fight certain metastatic cancers and Wilson disease, researchers at the university have discovered an invaluable clue to the drug's inner-workings. The researchers said the drug results in metallochaperones being sequestered in the body along with the copper they contain, stopping the normal functioning of both inside the cell. The research study's author, Thomas V. O'Halloran, said his team's findings should allow for the development of new drugs oriented toward metal trafficking pathways. "Essential metals are at the center of many emerging problems in health, medicine and the environment, and this work opens the door to new biological experiments," the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison professor of chemistry at Northwestern said. Also credited in the study of tetrathiomolybdate's three-dimensional structure are Northwestern professor of biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology, Alfonso Mondragón, and graduate student Yi Xue. You can't sweat off effects of alcohol LONDON (UPI) -- Exercising the day after heavy drinking does little to minimize the effects of alcohol, British Public Health Minister Gillian Merron said. "If you have a big night at the pub, you're not going to compensate with a workout the following day," Merron told The Daily Telegraph. Nicolay Sorensen, alcohol concern director of policy and communications, agreed. "It is encouraging that so many heavy drinkers recognize their drinking habits aren't good for them and that they want to make up for it by taking exercise," Sorensen said. "But people need to be aware that regularly drinking double the recommended limits comes with health risks that can't simply be burned off down the gym, in the pool or on the football pitch." The Telegraph said results of a YouGov survey indicate 20 percent of people attempt to compensate for heavy drinking by exercising or playing a sport. Copyright 2009 by United Press International

What makes holidays special can kill pets SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (UPI) -- The very things that make the holidays festive for people can make them fatal to pets, U.S. veterinarians warn. Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief executive officer of the American Veterinary Medical Association, says turkey, tinsel, greasy foods, mistletoe, Christmas trees, chocolates and baked goods are all things that can result in an emergency veterinary visit. "Consider the dog that gets into that turkey carcass," DeHaven says in a video for a pet-safe holiday. "Because of the high fat content this can cause a really serious condition called pancreatitis." This is the time of year many veterinary hospitals report more emergency calls than any other time -- often associated with pets getting into food they simply shouldn't have, DeHaven says. "Many of the worst poisonings during the holiday season occur when we're not at home. Be sure after Thanksgiving dinner that you put that turkey carcass out in the trash, well out of reach of your pets," DeHaven says. Also, wrap candies or foods that may be in holiday packages because a pet has a sensitive nose and could get into those things -- and if that happens while you're not home, you wouldn't be there to help them, DeHaven recommends. CDC: H1N1 pneumococcal infection worrisome ATLANTA (UPI) -- Federal health officials said they are seeing an increase in serious pneumococcal infections around the United States, a finding described as "worrisome." "Flu infections can increase the risk of pneumococcal disease -- pneumococcus is a bacteria that commonly affects the lung or sometimes the bloodstream -- in a typical non-pandemic year, most serious pneumococcal infections occur in people age 65 and older, in previous pandemics, there has been an increase in pneumococcal infections in younger people," Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters in a briefing. "It turns out that in this pandemic, we are seeing an increase in pneumococcal infections in younger persons. We're looking in our active bacterial core surveillance, what we call our ABCs site, and it's in those sites that we have seen this increase in what's called invasive pneumococcal disease." The CDC looked at the five-year average of how much invasive pneumococcal disease occurs in October. In the Denver metropolitan area -- one of the 10 ABC sites where collaborative investigation is ongoing -- the average for five years is about 20 cases, but there have been 58 serious pneumococcal cases in October, Schuchat said. "The findings in Denver probably reflect findings that are occurring in other parts of the country where the surveillance hasn't been as intensive," Schuchat said. "There's a vaccine for adults to prevent these serious pneumococcal infections. But only 25 percent of high risk adults under 65 have gotten that vaccine."
