WHO: H1N1 deaths near 8,000

GENEVA, Switzerland (UPI) -- The World Health Organization says there have been nearly 8,000 H1N1 deaths worldwide so far, with the total rising by more than 1,000 in a single week.

WHO figures show at least 7,826 people worldwide have died since the H1N1 influenza virus first became apparent in Mexico in April, the BBC reported Saturday.

Europe experienced an 85 percent increase in H1N1 deaths during the last week with its toll increasing from at least 350 to at least 650 people.

WHO's special adviser on pandemic influenza, Keiji Fukuda, said the influenza strain still appears to be mutating, but most sufferers only experience mild symptoms.

"If every mutation is reported out there it would be like reporting changes in the weather," Fukuda said.

"The question is whether these mutations suggest that there is a fundamental change going on in viruses out there -- whether there's a turn for the worse in terms of severity."

France's Health Surveillance Institute said in a statement that a mutated form of H1N1 has been blamed for the deaths of two people in two French cities, the BBC reported.

"This mutation could increase the ability of the virus to affect the respiratory tracts and, in particular, the lung tissue," the government agency said.

Brain study points to jet lag help

MANCHESTER, England (UPI) -- Jet lag sufferers may have help soon in re-tuning their body clock to lessen the effects of the travelers' condition, a British research study suggests.

A University of Manchester team studied brain cells playing a key role in the body's waking and sleeping timing, the BBC reported Saturday.

Long believed to be quiet during the day, these cells can actually be "overexcited" to the point of appearing dormant, then calm down enough to be normally active and tell the body to awake, the study said.

This is the first study into the effect these cells have on the body clock, the BBC said.

The scientist leading the study team says the research could lead to treatments for jet lag and sleep disorders.

"There's a lot of interest in the pharmaceutical industry, obviously, to try to develop chemical treatments to reset your daily clock," Professor Hugh Piggins said.

Some with HIV have better quality of life

CINCINNATI (UPI) -- Some patients with human immunodeficiency virus experience an improved quality of life following their diagnosis, U.S. researchers found.

Dr. Joel Tsevat of the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and colleagues conducted two sets of interviews and completed chart reviews of 347 HIV outpatients from three U.S. cities from 2002-2004.

"In two interviews, conducted a year to 18 months apart, patients compared their current life with life before being diagnosed with HIV -- we found that many patients said their life is better than it was before their diagnosis, although results of such comparisons often change over time," Tsevat, the principal investigator, said in a statement.

The first interview showed that 31 percent of the patients said their lives were better after diagnosis, while 28 percent said they were worse, and the remainder -- 140 patients -- said their lives were about the same or that they were undecided.

After the second interview, about one-fifth of patients changed their answers to indicate life improvement after diagnosis and one-sixth changed answers to reflect a feeling of life deterioration.

"The two main factors associated with the feeling that life has improved, relative to pre-diagnosis, were optimism and spirituality," Tsevat said.

The findings are published in the journal AIDS Patient Care and STDs.

Insecure adolescents experience more pain

MONTREAL (UPI) -- Insecure adolescents experience more intense pain in the form of frequent headaches, abdominal pain and joint pain, researchers in Canada found.

Dr. Isabelle Tremblay of the University of Montreal and Dr. Michael Sullivan, a psychology professor at McGill University, said these teens are also more likely to be depressed than peers with secure attachments.

"Although previous studies in adults found that an individual's security level was influenced by painful experiences, it was not clear why relationship security should be related to pain," Tremblay said in a statement.

"We found that adolescents with insecure relationships tend to be more 'alarmist' about their pain symptoms; they have a tendency to amplify the degree of threat or severity of their pain. This amplification leads to more intense pain and more severe depressive symptoms."

Some 382 students, in grades 8 to12, were recruited for the study and asked to fill out questionnaires on the frequency and intensity of their emotional and physical pain.

The study is published in the Journal of Pain.
