Well, the Holidays have come to a close; yesterday afternoon I took daughter C to the parish theater for Festa della Befana, which involved skits, singing, an exhibition by the Karate club, and a visit by the Old Lady herself. The hall was packed, the audience (especially the kids) was almost as loud as the stage, and everyone had a great time. Especially Daughter C, who won the first prize at the raffle: a soccer ball signed by all the players of La Fiorentina, our team. Woot!

In the Spotlight | Adriana's Minestrone di Verdure
This is a Veronese variation on a classic Italian theme, and is extraordinarily creamy, thanks to a healthy number of potatoes. Adriana says you can use short pasta such as ditalini in the dish, but that she prefers croutons instead, which provide a pleasant texture contrast.

This is a dish you'll find throughout Northern Italy; the name changes with location because so does the wine. The important thing is that the wine be dry; the finished dish will have a pleasing tartness that goes quite well with grated cheese, and, as a first course, is a wonderful beginning of a meal.

The first time I was ever served fish cooked this way, I was astonished at how tender and tasty it was. Italians also bake sea bass in salt, and indeed, that was what I was served. You could also roast any other not-too-oily fish this way.
