Just How Horrible Were My 2009 Predictions? The time of reckoning is at hand; it’s time to look back on My Horrible Predictions for Social Media in 2009. How did he do? Let’s watch: “1.) President Obama will find a way to use his beloved BlackBerry after he takes office, although in a more limited fashion.” We’ll call this one a win, albeit a cheap one – a few weeks after my post, the press reported that Mr. Obama did in fact get to keep his BlackBerry, and after that, I guess people kind of forgot about it, save for a spoof “hacked e-mails” book that came out in June, and an occasional picture of it on his belt. (Though the Blackberry did crop up again this week, in an AP story about the president’s Hawaiian vacation.) (The second part of the first prediction was a bit of snark about transforming the federal government through social media. While we haven’t yet seen a full-blown revolution, the Gov 2.0 train rolls on.) “2.) We're going to see a substantial, even severe, winnowing of social media apps and networks. (In other words, Bubble 2.0 goes *pop*).” Eh, I would say this was overstated. While there’s been no shortage of companies diving in to the dotcom deadpool (including moldy oldies like GeoCities), there wasn’t really a bloodbath, and a lot of it just seemed to be regular movement and attrition. And, pressed for a specific, I called out Plurk as a likely candidate, and they’re still around in Asia (and in fact, were deemed good enough for MSN China to steal from). “3.) People still aren't going to use OpenID very much.” Again, this one was a low-hanging meatball over the center of the plate, but I’d have to call this one confirmed. (On a related note, has the hype around Facebook Connect and other single-sign-in schemes died down, or is it just me?) “4.) At least three more major metropolitan newspapers are going to go Web-only. We'll also see some movement on broadcast/newspaper integration…” You’re going to make me count? This one looks like a near-miss: The Christian Science Monitor led the way in 2008 (it still prints a weekly edition, too), so that doesn’t count. After that, we’ve got the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. And that’s about it. The Detroit Free Press isn’t quite online-only yet, and then other likely candidates, such as the Rocky Mountain News, ended up spoiling things by folding completely. (I’m only counting larger U.S. papers here — see more at Newspaper Death Watch.) As to the bit about broadcast/newspaper integration — I’m not seeing it, but then this was a pretty-poorly stated prediction, anyway. Finally, “5.) Something’s going to happen with Twitter. I’m going to go with “fade into the background as more of the hoi polloi jump on, and a new shiny thing comes on the scene.”" Yeah, about that…. The Final Tally So it looks like I didn’t do so good for 2009. 2 hits (and those were pretty soft), a near-miss, and 2 complete whiffs. Naturally, an entry of this sort demands a follow-on with predictions for 2010, so I’ll try to get to that before too much more of this year slips by. How’d I do? Leave a comment. The list includes Network Solutions and cnn.com, whitehouse.gov, reuters.com and espn.com among others> All of these websites were redesigned in 2009. In 2009 the Network Solutions web site team worked very hard to redesign the site and make it more user friendly. Helping us was a Washington DC firm the Pappas Group. The goal was to make it easy to use and we received a lot of feedback from the customers and community which helped us with the redesign. The web design team focused on simplifying the layout of products and services as well as streamlining the site navigation so customers could find the information they need quickly. In addition, the team worked to eliminate technical jargon used to describe services in order to make the site more appealing to small business owners. Head on over to Network Solutions and see for yourself and don’t forget to check the other companies featured in the SmashingApps post.
