FRISCO, TEXAS (Jan. 2, 2010) - The US Youth Soccer National League Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 Girls competing this weekend solidified their standings today at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla., and Lake Myrtle Soccer Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
The remaining four teams in each of the National League Girls age groups will resume play March 19-21 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the 2010 Player’s Soccer Showcase where League standings will be finalized, champions will be crowned in each age group and the top two teams per age group will have their ticket punched to the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championships http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/link.asp?l=10&mid=698003&lid=102528 in Overland Park, Kan., July 20-25. This weekend, the Under-15 Girls Dallas Texans 95 Red (N-TX) secured advancement to the 2010 National Championships, to up the level of competition in the age group as only one of the coveted spots remains to advance to Nationals.
Under-15 Girls
After securing a trip to the 2010 National Championships with a win yesterday, the Dallas Texans 95 Red (N-TX) looked to be on a roll as they opened their game against Scorpions Elite (MA) with a 22 nd minute Paige Jacobs goal. This was the first goal scored against the Scorpions in this weekend of play, but Lauren Berman quickly countered for the Scorpions only one minute later for a 1-1 tie. Berman netted her second of the game in the 32 nd minute for the Scorpions’ 2-2 lead, which held until the Texans' Sophie Groff scored in the 53 rd minute. Berman, current Under-15 Girls leading goal scorer with 13 goals, wrapped up a hat trick and the Scorpions' 3-2 victory with a 55 th minute goal.
Two Illinois teams, Sockers FC Chicago and NSA Premier Fireballs, faced off in game that eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. Caroline Casas put NSA on the board in the 13 th minute with a 30 yard shot that hit the crossbar and deflected off the keeper’s back, but Sockers’ Alexa Ben found the equalizer in the 20 th minute. The teams had several shots on goal, but none that finished, holding the game at ones.
Under-16 Girls
The Dallas Texans 94 Red (N-TX) and FC Pennsylvania Strikers (E-PA) game was held at zeros until the 70 th minute when the Texans’ Makenzie Koch scored off of a scramble in front of the goal. The Texans kept hold of the 1-0 advantage for the victory.
A battle of two US Youth Soccer Region II teams took place with NSA Premier Fury (IL) and KC Select Scream Red (MO). NSA took the 3-0 victory with two goals from Zoe Swift (35:00 and 79:00) and one from Corrine Harris (49:00).
NSA and the Texans complete their 2009-2010 National League campaigns with 4-1-2 records, but will have to wait until the remaining four National League teams compete in Las Vegas to determine the Under-16 Girls League champion and the two team that will advance to the National Championships.
Under-17 Girls
It was a rematch of the 2009 US Youth Soccer Region I championship game as Syosset Sting (E-NY) and Montclair United Thunderbolts (NJ) met on the field in their final game of the 2009-2010 National League season. In the Region I championship game, Syosset won 2-1 and today’s game told the same story. Liana Cornacchio had back-to-back headers off of corner kicks in the 11 th and 20 th minutes for the 2-0 Syosset lead, but Kate Schwindel took advantage of a PK to get Montclair on the board in the 27 th minute. The 2-1 score remained to set Syosset’s 4-1-2 National League record, one that has them leading the Under-17 Girls age group until the remaining teams complete in Las Vegas where League standings will be finalized.
Ponte Vedra Storm (FL) and the Dallas Texans 93 Red (N-TX) faced one another at the 2009 National Championships in a game Ponte Vedra won 2-0 and eventually put them in place to play in the National Championship final game. As the teams met again today, Morgan Brian put Ponte Vedra up 1-0 over the Texans in the 12 th minute on a shot from 20 yards out. Both teams put forth solid competitive efforts, but neither was able to finish, for a final score of 1-0, a result that places both in a three-way tie for sixth place in the League.
