You Can't Keep A Broken Back Down

My brother-in-law, Dave Webb, is one of my favorite people in the world.  He's over six feet tall and looks at the world through warm, piercing blue eyes.  His voice has a deep, calming resonance to it; his whole presence tends to draw people in and make them instantly comfortable.

Dave has quite a history behind him.  He has excelled in nearly everything; he has a black belt in martial arts; he has garnered acting parts alongside some of Hollywood's top stars.  And, perhaps the achievement that towers above all others; he married my sister and made her glow.

However, Dave learned several years ago that success is often balanced with challenge and defeat.  Through all his rigorous physical activities, Dave began to experience severe back problems.

It's gotten worse over time.  He now finds it harder and harder to perform common tasks, such as lifting small boxes.  Sometimes even walking becomes a painful chore.

He's been to see a whole team of doctors over the last few years, each giving him a different and often conflicting message.

One estimates that he's going to wind up in a wheelchair within a few years.

Others tell him that his vertebrae are fusing together.

Some are suggesting that they can begin to fix it, but one slip during the procedure and he will die.

Most people I know would take this news as an emotional death sentence.  They would figure that if they can't walk or do the things they used to be so good at, they have no reason to look forward to the rest of their life.

But not Dave.
Though he's human and has bad days every now and then, every time I see and talk to him, he still has that same piercing, blue-eyed confidence and welcoming tenor to his voice.  He exudes a sense of success, even when the circumstances of his life seem wrapped in failure.

Is this a crippled man?  Hardly.

Dave has made it clear to the world that he's never giving up.  No matter what the doctors tell him or what bones aren't working correctly, he's still going to go after what he wants in his life.  He's still going to succeed.

Why?  Because he refuses to tell himself otherwise.
