Rare Nintendo game sells for $40,000

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 04:07 AM PST

Dave, from Kansas, was impressed by the recent eBay auction of the original 80’s Nintendo Entertainment System which sold for $13,105. What drove the price so high was one of the games that came with it, an obscure release called ‘Stadium Events.’ The game was still in its original cardboard box, itself valued over $10,00.

Dave then decided to see what kind of treasures he might have.

“We had quite a collection (185+ games) that has sat in our basement for over 20 years,” Dave told Y! Games. “The games were on a list to be brought to Goodwill – in fact, within a month, Goodwill was going to have them.”

To his astonishment, not only did he find a copy of the same game that just fetched over $13,000 on eBay — highly sought-after collector’s item Stadium Events — it was in perfect condition, right down to the original shrinkwrapping and Richard Gordman pricetag. (A mere $29.99, if you’re wondering.)

“Now I'm not much of a collector, but I know that having a factory seal is good,” he said.

But he’s only just now finding out quite how good.

As it turns out, the game’s unopened condition makes Dave’s copy of Stadium Events three times more valuable: he sold it on auction site eBay for a breathtaking $41,300. It’s thought to be one of only two shrinkwrapped copies of the game still in existence.

OK, now, everyone run to the basement to check your old games! Link

Send Your Avatar to the Moon with NASA's Project M

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 07:02 PM PST

1,000 days from now, NASA could start sending humanoid avatars to the moon. They would be controlled by scientists on Earth using motion-capture suits, giving the scientists the feeling of being on the lunar surface. Check out this video from the Johnson Space Center.  Could it really happen that fast? Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo doesn’t see why not.

…the mission would be a lot simpler than a human-based one. It will also be quite cheaper than the real thing. First, you don’t have to care about life support systems, which will make spacecraft manufacturing a lot less complex. The whole system would also weight a lot less, reducing the need for the development of a huge rocket, and again reducing the costs.

…Now imagine these NASA C-3POs roaming our satellite, controlled by all kind of scientists using telepresence suits down here, all looking for interesting things using high definition visors, and able to move just like they would move on planet Earth.

Even better would be if they could allow non-scientists a chance to walk on the moon as well.

Breast Implant Stops Bullet

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 05:52 PM PST

A Los Angeles shooting victim’s breast implant may have saved her life by slowing the bullet before it reached her heart:

She survived a gunshot to the chest, but the the bullet left a scar and deflated the implant.

“She’s just one lucky woman,” Dr. Ashkan Ghavami told the LA Times. “I saw the CT scan. The bullet fragments were millimeters from her heart and her vital organs. Had she not had the implant, she might not be alive today.”[...]

An LAPD firearms instructor told the Times it’s possible the implant interrupted the velocity of the bullet.

“I don’t want to say a boob job is the equivalent of a bulletproof vest,” Scott Reitz told the Times. “So don’t go getting breast enhancements as a means to deflect a possible incoming bullet.”

The Tiny Origami of Mui-Ling Teh

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 04:24 PM PST

Canadian artist Mui-Ling Teh makes miniature works of origami, such as this boat, which was made from a 6×10mm piece of paper. Of her work, she wrote:

I began folding my series of miniature models around the beginning of April 2008. One day I took a random strip of paper and cut a square to fold a crane out of it. I was daydreaming so I wasn't paying attention to how small the paper was. After completing the crane I realized it was rather tiny. This is the crane I present in my piece called Born from the Hand. I only used tweezers for the last few folds. The paper size must have been about 15×15mm. After I folded that crane I decided to try folding an even smaller crane, which I present in Born from Fingers and Born from the Pinky. I also began folding various other models in miniature form. As the pieces were gettting smaller or more complex. I needed to rely on tweezers more often. The smallest work I've created to date was Born from the Cell which was folded from a 3×3mm piece of trace paper. However when it gets that small it becomes very difficult to take a photo of; especially with a simple point and shoot camera. Normally I fold something at a size that can be photographed for a particular concept while still being impressively small.

Ages of Social Networking Users

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 04:09 PM PST

Royal Pingdom conducted a study of the age distribution of different social networking sites. It’s often middle-aged people who dominate the user bases of these sites:

Although we can't say how this will change over time, at the moment the older generations are for one reason or another (tech savvy, interest, etc.) not using social networking sites to a large extent. This probably reflects general internet usage, but we suspect the difference is enhanced when it comes to the social media sphere where site usage tends to be more frequent and time-consuming than usual.

It is also noteworthy that social media isn't dominated by the youngest, often most tech-savvy generations, but rather by what has to be referred to as middle-aged people (although at the younger end of that spectrum).

Not long ago I was diagnosed with a rare strain of Tuberculosis and I’ve been stuck in a hospital quarantine room in Sydney for a total of about 60 days, with at least another 30 to go, while I am being treated and stuff… To help kill the time and take my mind off the treatment, I have been making some vids from hospital. Here is a rap song that I made about my time here in quarantine so far.

Young Chimpanzees Have Better Memories Than College Students

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 08:34 AM PST

Studies performed at Kyoto University suggest that young chimpanzees have memory skills better than those of adult humans.

When they touched the first digit, the others were replaced with white squares, and they had to rely on their memory to press the right sequence. The young chimps took to this task particularly well and amazingly, they finished the task more quickly than human adults…

When the numbers were flashed for two thirds of a second, Ayumu’s skills were the equal of 6 university students who pressed the right sequence 80% of the time. If the numbers were displayed for just a fifth of a second, the students couldn’t cope. They didn’t have enough time to make a single saccade, the small eye flickers that we make when we scan a page or image. Without the luxury of exploring the screen, the students only answered accurately 40% of the time. Ayumu, on the other hand, wasn’t fazed and maintained his earlier high scores.

The researchers also postulate that human children may have similar eidetic abilities when they are very young, but lose this capacity by the time they finish school.  Or something like that – I can’t remember.
