Athletes with broken bones may not know it LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- Athletes often mistake serious foot or ankle injuries for minor problems because they are able to walk, a U.S. foot and ankle surgeon says. "Serious injuries can exist even when the foot or ankle is able to accept weight or pressure," Robert Duggan, a foot and ankle surgeon from Orlando, Fla., said in a statement. One such injury involves the Lisfranc joint, on the top of the foot. It's possible to walk with a Lisfranc injury, but this can lead to damage to the soft tissues of the foot or even chronic conditions such as arthritis, Duggan says. Another injury that may be overlooked is a fracture of the fifth metatarsal -- the bone that runs along the outer side of the foot. This can accompany an ankle sprain, or the athlete may think it's a sprain but it is a difficult injury to heal, and continuing to participate in sports will make it worse. Reading to English-speaking kids a must EDMONTON, Alberta (UPI) -- Reading to kids is a crucial tool in English-language development, but not other languages, Canadian researchers said. The study, published in Learning and Instruction, found a child learning to read English -- an orthographically inconsistent language where letters can have more than one sound -- need more help than a child learning to read in Greek -- a language with one-to-one correspondence between a letter and its sounds. "We have found that in English, you need a rich home literacy environment -- reading lots of books to children," study leader George Georgiou of University of Alberta in Edmonton said in a statement. "It's absolutely necessary." Lacking such support, English-speaking children run the risk of falling behind at least two years versus children learning to read in Greek, the researchers said. Georgiou recommends English-speaking parents invest time in reading to their children or at least expose them to educational TV programs such as "Sesame Street" and multimedia tools such as spelling games. New no-fasting pre-diabetes test available WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A new test can help people learn if they are at risk for diabetes, a U.S. non-profit group representing clinical laboratories said. This test does not require fasting and is not affected by recent dietary changes, said Alan Mertz, president of the American Clinical Laboratory Association in Washington. "Ask your doctor about a quick and easy lab test called hemoglobin A1C," Mertz said in a statement. "The test can tell you if you actually have diabetes or are close to developing it -- a silent and serious condition called pre-diabetes." Mertz said not only will 40 percent of those with pre-diabetes who take no action become fully diabetic in three to eight years, but people with pre-diabetes have a 50 percent greater chance of heart disease, stroke or kidney disease. However, being "pre-warned is pre-armed." Mertz says a clinical trial, called the Diabetes Protection Project, found making improvements in diet and exercise reduced a pre-diabetic's risk of getting diabetes by 58 percent. 48,000 die of preventable hospital deaths WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Infections acquired during the course of a U.S. hospital stay kill almost 48,000 a year and cost an extra $8.1 billion, researchers found. Ramanan Laxminarayan, principal investigator for Extending the Cure, a project examining antibiotic resistance for the think-tank Resources for the Future in Washington, and his colleagues analyzed 69 million discharge records from hospitals in 40 states and identified two conditions caused by healthcare-associated infections -- sepsis and pneumonia. Laxminarayan says sepsis, a potentially lethal systemic response to infection, and pneumonia can lead to longer hospital stays, serious complications and death. "In many cases, these conditions could have been avoided with better infection control in hospitals," Laxminarayan said in a statement. "Infections that are acquired during the course of a hospital stay cost the United States a staggering amount in terms of lives lost and healthcare costs." The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found patients who developed sepsis after surgery stayed in the hospital 11 days longer and the infections cost an extra $33,000 per person to treat. The study found nearly 20 percent of people who developed sepsis after surgery died from the infection. Pneumonia, which can be cause by a dirty ventilator tube, can cause an extra 14 days in the hospital, cost an extra $46,000 per person and cause 11 percent to die, the study said.
