Salmonella concerns prompt pet food recall

LINCOLN, Neb. (UPI) -- Nature's Variety of Lincoln, Neb., said it has voluntarily recalled certain pet food products amid concerns the items may contain Salmonella.

The company said in a release Thursday the recall is for Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet products for dogs and cats. The products either contain chicken medallions, patties or chubs, and each features a "Best If Used By" date of Nov. 10.

The recalled products may be returned for full refund or replacement to local retailers, the company said.

A consumer complaint alerted Nature's Variety to the possibility of Salmonella contamination in the named products, but no people or pets have been reported sickened by the products.

"Because pet health and safety are our top priority, Nature's Variety takes every step necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products," Nature's Variety Chief Executive Officer Reed Howlet said. "In addition to our industry best manufacturing practices, and in an abundance of caution, all Nature's Variety raw frozen products now will undergo a 'test and hold' period before being released for sale."

Study: Early years offer clues to obesity

NORFOLK, Va. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say their study of obese children and teenagers indicates individuals' early years offer signs of a lifetime of obesity problems.

Dr. John Harrington of the Eastern Virginia Medical School said more than 50 percent of the obese children and teenagers his team studied were already overweight before they were 2 years old, the BBC reported Saturday.

Of the more than 100 obese subjects studied, 25 percent were overweight by 5 months of age and 90 percent were overweight by the time they turned 5 years old.

The BBC said all of the study's subjects were overweight before they hit 10 years of age. The subject group had an average age of 12.

Harrington said the medical community should pay attention to the results of the study, additional specifics of which were not released.

"Too often, doctors wait until medical complications arise before they begin treatment," Harrington said.

"Getting parents and children to change habits that have already taken hold is a monumental challenge fraught with roadblocks and disappointments.

Rhubarb shows promise in fighting cancer

SHEFFIELD, England (UPI) -- Rhubarb, especially when cooked, shows potential for killing or preventing cancer cells, researchers at Britain's Sheffield Hallam University said.

As with many red vegetables, rhubarb contains cancer-fighting polyphenols, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

Baking rhubarb for 20 minutes, as is done with some recipes, increases the concentration of polyphenols, Nikki Jordan-Mahy, a Sheffield biomedical researcher, wrote in a recent issue of the journal Food Chemistry.

Oriental medicinal rhubarb has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Now, Jordan-Mahy said, garden rhubarb grown in Britain has shown medicinal promise, especially a variety grown in South Yorkshire.

Jordan-Mahy's team is studying a combination of rhubarb polyphenols and chemotherapy agents needed to kill leukemia cells.

"Cancer affects one in three individuals in (Britain) so it's very important to discover novel, less toxic, treatments, which can overcome resistance," she said.

Condom giveaway aimed at AIDS

MANILA, Philippines (UPI) -- The Philippine Department of Health initiated an anti-AIDS campaign Saturday by giving away condoms at florists.

Health officials say the condom giveaway does not promote artificial birth control, banned by the Roman Catholic Church, The Philippine Star reported.

"This is not for family planning. This is for the prevention of HIV/AIDS which is now on the rise," Dr. Ed Janairo, director of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said.

The condom distribution is tied to Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. Adults who buy flowers were being given brochures on AIDS prevention and vouchers to be exchanged for condoms at Health Department booths, while children were given candy and brochures.

The department has adopted the ABC model of AIDS prevention, with A standing for abstinence, B for be faithful to your partner and C for use a condom.

There were 835 new AIDS cases diagnosed in the Philippines in 2009, and 126 in December, the highest monthly total in a quarter-century, officials said.
