Crabfu's DIY iPad stylus

In response to Collin's DIY iPad stylus video, I-Wei created his own version that's even simpler to build, using a metal-tipped mechanical lead holder as the conductive barrel (and the same type of conducting foam for the nib). I love that he was able to repurpose his favorite (all-metal) lead holder that he hadn't used in years, since going digital in his design work. Nice work, I-Wei!

This fleet of humongous cupcake scooters first appeared at the 2007 Maker Faire in San Mateo. They're the brainchild of Tesla Motors engineer Greg Solberg.

Behinduino great for breadboard Arduino prototyping

behinduino_front.jpg

behinduino_back.jpg

Over at MAKE: Japan, Takumi Funada found this nifty project that squeezes an Atmega168 onto the back side of a half breadboard, leaving the entire front available for connections. Looks like it could be handy, as long as you don't forget that there is a circuit connected back there! I'd like to see one of these made with a transparent breadboard!

Remixing with swing

Sweet Child O' Mine (Swing Version) by plamere

White Rabbit - The Swing Version by plamere

Tristan Jehan's Swinger does a heckuva good job adding a convincing swing to prerecorded music.

Written in Python, the code uses the Echo Nest Remix API to time-stretch half of each beat while condensing the remainder. Check out more of plamere's examples over at Music Machinery. [via joshuatopolsky]

Jason Lentz shows off his impressive cardboard exoskeleton at Maker Faire. To hear Jason tell it, the arms were the only tricky part to make. There's more info at the project's Facebook group and in Jason's Flickr collection.

In the Maker Shed: Robotic arm kit

MKEL13-2.jpg

Need a robotic arm to do your evil bidding? Then look no further than the Robotic arm kit available in the Maker Shed.

You command the gripper to open and close, and control wrist motion of 120 degrees, an extensive elbow range of 300°, base rotation of 270°, base motion of 180°, vertical reach of 15", horizontal reach of 12.6", and lifting capacity of 100g. Added features include a search light design on the gripper and a safety gear audible indicator on all 5 gearboxes to prevent any potential injury or gear breakage during operation. Award-winning kit assembles with simple hand tools. Ages 10 and up.

Features
  • 5 motors and 5 joints
  • LED-lighted gripper
  • Safety audible indicators on all 5 gearboxes
  • Requires 4 D batteries
  • Simple hand tools required for assembly: screwdriver, long-nose pliers, diagonal cutter

Awesome GBC (great ball contraption)

This gigantic Mindstorms robot is quite possibly the most skillfully designed I've ever seen. There are at least ten different subsystems that deserve their own posts -- I especially love the many ball-elevating systems, particularly the one that sorts soccer balls into one channel and basketballs into the other.

GBCs are collaborative building projects where several geographically separated builders can construct modules of a large Rube Goldbergesque machine and then assemble it at a Lego convention with the expectation that it will function as planned. [via The NXTStep]

Brain machines at Maker Faire

brain_machine_maker_faire.jpg
Photo: Billy Baque

Bobby Cossum was at this year's Maker Faire showing off his upgrades to Mitch Altman's Brain Machine from MAKE Volume 10:

This is an upgrade to Mitch's brain machine that requires moving the low pass filters from LED positions 3 and 4 to positions 4 and 5. New firmware provides superior audio and improved syncing of the LEDs with the binaural beats, as well as allowing software control of LED brightness. With an upgrade to the power supply, RGB LEDs are also supported. The firmware will also compile for an ATMegaX8 and will run on an Arduino.

You can download the code here, but be careful with it. This kid was still in the exhibit hall when we locked it up on Monday.

DSLR pinhole lens

Do you like the way a pinhole photo looks, but don't have the time to develop the photo? That's where the DSLR pinhole lens comes in. Maker Matt Devlin has put together a tutorial on how to make your own using household materials. [via DIYPhotography]

Printing electroluminescent displays

Jeri Ellsworth talks to Jon Beck at Maker Faire about silk-screening EL displays with electroluminescent ink manufactured by Dupont. Jon is from CLUE, the Columbia Laboratory for Unconventional Electronics. (How great is that name? Their logo is a question mark where the dot is the ground symbol.) The video is a little hard to hear, with all the ambient noise, but there's more information on the link below.

Road From Maker Faire 2010: beatseqr/steppa wrapup

Wow, we had an awesome time showing off our project to hundreds of people at Maker Faire Bay Area 2010! Here's a short video showing some of the reactions we got when people put the headphones on and started making their own beats with beatseqr and steppa. We're just getting started, so keep an eye out for us at http://beatseqr.com/blog/

Evolutionary Art Competition @ GECCO 2010

Evolutionary Art Competition @ GECCO 2010 - Scott Draves, Electric Sheep is one of the organizers and one of my favorite artists!

This competition invites conference participants to demonstrate that genetic and evolutionary
computation can be applied to create impressive and provocative works of art. The competition
will identify the best work, be it an image, a sculpture, a music score, a video, an interactive
online experience, or a system that exhibits some form of independent creativity.
