The Expository Genius of John CalvinLast year marked the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. Calvin was born in France on July 10, 1509, but his profound influence on Christianity is still being felt. In fact, Time magazine recently listed “The New Calvinism” as one of the “10 Ideas Changing the World Right Now.” Celebrations of the Calvin quincentenary took place all throughout 2009 and all over the world. We seem to understand that we owe a debt of gratitude to this man, and rightfully so. John Calvin was much more than merely a theologian, he lived the Bible and taught others to do the same. He gave clarity and guidance—from the Word of God—to a Europe which was steeped in pagan mythology and mysticism. He led his hearers out of the slavery and bondage of the state church and into the green pastures and quiet waters of God’s covenant. Calvin was much more than merely a theologian; he was a pastor.

Steven J. Lawson’s book, The Expository Genius of John Calvin, is helpful in dispelling many of the false characterizations of just who John Calvin was. Although on the surface it sounds like a book for pastors, Expository Genius needs to be read by a wide variety of readers. It serves as a great introduction, not only to Calvin himself, but to the theology of the church (ecclesiology), to the historical setting of the time period and challenges that faced Calvin and his contemporaries, and to the powerful importance of faithful preaching from God’s Word...
