Sports Update For Indiana Friday July 30, 2010 | Baseball Zambrano reinstated by Cubs DENVER (UPI) -- Pitcher Carlos Zambrano, on the team's restricted list for more than a month, was reinstated Friday by the Chicago Cubs. Zambrano was removed from the Cubs' active roster after a June 25 incident in which he had a heated confrontation with teammates, including first baseman Derrek Lee. He underwent anger management therapy during his suspension. Zambrano opened the season in the starting rotation but was moved to the bullpen in April before being returned to the starter's role. He started a game against the Chicago White Sox June 25 and allowed four runs in the first inning, after which the dugout incident occurred. Zambrano is 3-6 with a 5.66 earned run average. He's appeared in 22 games this season, starting nine. To make room for Zambrano on the active roster, the Cubs gave relief pitcher Bob Howry his unconditional release. Howry was 0-3 with a 5.66 ERA in 24 games since joining the team in May. Jackson was the 20th overall selection in the draft and is expected to start with Glover Quin at cornerback since the Texans lost first-team cornerback Dunta Robinson to Atlanta through free agency. Jackson played in college for Alabama, leaving after his junior season. Last year he made 49 tackles and broke up 13 passes. Terms of his deal with Houston weren't released but the Houston Chronicle said the contract covers five years and totals about $13 million, with more than $10 million guaranteed. The Texans also signed second-round choice Ben Tate, a running back. With the Jackson and Tate signing, Houston has signed all of its 2010 draft selections. Tseng closed with three birdies in her final five holes Friday and is at 8-under 136 through 36 holes. Cristie Kerr shot into a tie for second with a 5-under 67 Friday. She, Brittany Lincicome and Amy Yang, who each shot 1-under 71 Friday, are tied at 4-under. Three golfers are tied for fifth, five strokes off the lead. Tseng had a birdie at the second hole Friday but suffered her first bogey of the tournament at No. 3. She had a birdie at the sixth hole and was steady with seven consecutive pars. She then had a birdie at the par-3 14th hole and added back-to-back birdies at 16 and 17 to get to 4-under. Kerr's 65 is the low round of the tournament. She had five bogeys in Thursday's first round en route to a 1-over 73. But Friday she opened with birdies at 1 and 2, holes she had bogeys on Thursday, and had four other birdies against one bogey the rest of the round. Davydenko, the tournament's top-seed and defending champion, was routed by No. 8-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-1 in 65 minutes. Chela broke Davydenko's serve seven times in eight games and took 65 percent of the points in the quarterfinal match. Friday's schedule included four second-round matches that were rained out Thursday, meaning four players had to battle through two matches Friday. That included the No. 2-seeded Melzer and No. 3 Ljubicic. Melzer won his first match in 46 minutes, dropping just one game. But Andreas Seppi, who had a tougher time in his second-round match Friday but still won in straight sets, stunned Melzer 6-1, 6-4 with a pair of breaks in both sets. Ljubicic was pushed to three sets in his first match Friday and then was ousted by Potito Starace 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the day's final match. Fourth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero, playing just once Friday, needed only 50 minutes to dump No. 6-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-2. He saved all four of the break-point chances he faced. Saturday's semifinals will have Ferrero going against Chela while Seppi will meet Starace.
