Sports Update For Indiana Tuesday August 31, 2010 | Baseball McCourts begin divorce fight over Dodgers LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers began divorce proceedings with ownership of the baseball team at the center of their dispute, documents show. Frank and Jamie McCourt's unseemly public punch-up, begun in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday, is a he said/she said battle over whether a post-marital agreement signed in 2004 by both parties is valid, the Los Angeles Times reported. Frank McCourt wants it enforced; his wife does not. The agreement says Frank McCourt is the sole owner of the Dodgers and Jamie is the sole owner of the couple's homes. Jamie McCourt says she signed the agreement without reading it and would never knowingly sign away her right to the Dodgers. He says the document did exactly what it was intended to do, and Jamie wanted it that way. She says she signed the document sight unseen because she trusted her husband to protect their homes from creditors, the Times said. In a city known for excess and celebrities behaving badly, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been regarded as a class act since being owned by the O'Malley family. But now mommy and daddy are fighting and who's watching the kids? Dodger Stadium had been a family oasis until recently when the McCourt discord spilled into the park, tensing the vibe. Now rap music has mostly replaced the traditional organist and a convicted felon (Snoop Dogg) is on Dodgervision telling fans how to behave. And the Dodgers are one step out of the cellar with almost no hope of even grabbing a wild card berth in the NL playoffs.. (UPI) -- Former Kennesaw (Ga.) State University star basketball player Shuan Stegall was killed in a weekend shooting, authorities said Monday. Favre told Sports Illustrated the injection of lubricants into the ankle was "like a grease fitting," SI.com reported Monday. The signal-caller's ankle has been operated on three times. The latest surgery came May 22 when orthopedist Dr. James Andrews removed loose bodies from the joint. "They took out a cup full of stuff -- bone and all these other loose bodies," Favre said Saturday. When asked if he thought he could last a whole season, he replied: "I don't know. I have no idea, really." Favre told SI his ankle was hurting long before last season's NFC Championship Game against the New Orleans Saints. "It was bad before then," he said. "Now we'll see if I can make it. My mind's telling me one thing, but my body's telling me something else." A statement issued by U.S. Soccer indicated the agreement will keep Bradley at the helm of the U.S. team through the end of 2014. Bradley, 52, guided the United States to a first-place group finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa -- the first time in 80 years the U.S. team advanced that far. Bradley led the U.S. team to a regional CONCACAF championship in 2007. He followed that up with the team's first final of a major FIFA tournament when the American squad reached the championship match of the 2009 Confederations Cup after a 2-0 victory in the semifinal against top-ranked Spain. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Tennis Federer, Roddick cruise at U.S. Open NEW YORK (UPI) -- Former champions Roger Federer and Andy Roddick both cruised to first round victories Monday at the U.S. Open in New York. Federer, the No. 2 seed and five-time tourney winner, posted a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Brian Dabul of Argentina in the night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Swiss superstar reached the finals last year only to be stunned by Juan Martin del Potro, preventing him from capturing a sixth straight Flushing Meadows title. Ninth-seeded Roddick celebrated his 28th birthday with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Frenchman Stephane Robert, improving his career U.S. Open record to 36-9. Roddick, the tourney's 2003 champ, fired eight aces and had his serve broken only once in the match. He next faces Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, who downed Belgian Olivier Rochus 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2. In other Monday matches, fifth-seeded Swede Robin Soderling struggled mightily to survive a stiff challenge from unheralded Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer, hanging on for a 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 5-7, 6-4 victory. No. 6 seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia glided to a second-round berth with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 rout of American journeyman Michael Russell.
