Canadian loses fingers in tug-of-war

BEAR RIVER, Nova Scotia (UPI) -- A 59-year-old Canadian man was recovering Sunday after surgeons reattached four fingers severed during a tug-of-war contest in Nova Scotia, officials said.

Jim Thurber, a recently retired Digby municipal warden, was taking part in a friendly festival competition in Bear River Bear River Saturday when his fingers got caught and were sliced off, QMI Agency reported. He was being treated at a hospital in Halifax.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported the severed digits from Thurber's left hand were quickly put on ice and he was rushed to the hospital in Halifax.

"He just retired from being warden for 10 years," his sister-in-law, Phyllis Thurber, said. "He was just going to relax and go golfing and enjoy life, so it's kind of a blow. He's a very nice guy, the best you could find."

Woman grateful dog saved her from snake

DETROIT (UPI) -- A dog has paid a heavy physical price for protecting his owner from a rattlesnake, his Michigan owner says.

Kodi, a 3-year-old Samoyed, saved Brenda Lacroix of Davisburg from an Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake during a June walk in Shiawassee Basin Park in Springfield Township, Lacroix told the Detroit Free Press.

"This thing flew at his face," said Lacroix, a retired veterinary technician. "It was 3 1/2 feet long and the width of my arm."

Lacroix rushed Kodi's sagging body to her former employer as his face started to swell, and then the dog passed out.

While one veterinarian stabilized Kodi, another tried to find viper antivenin, which blocks the proteins that destroy blood vessels and cause internal bleeding.

The Detroit Zoo finally came through with five vials of expired antivenin, no longer usable on humans.

Over 5 hours, Kodi took the antivenin intravenously. Lacroix and Kodi have not been back to the park since.

Since the encounter, Kodi has lost control of an eyelid, drools and can't handle hot weather.

"Some days, I look at him and my heart breaks, and some days I look at him and think, 'What a brave boy,'" Lacroix said.

Man wins 1 million dumplings for karaoke

MOSCOW (UPI) -- U.S. telephone engineer Edward Pimentel has won 1 million dumplings for his performance at the World Karaoke Championships in Moscow, organizers said.

Pimental won the dumplings for singing rhythm and blues standards, but he didn't win the contest outright; he was named "audience favorite," the BBC reported.

At the rate of 100 dumplings a day, Pimentel should have enough to last for 27 years, the report said.

Winners of the Karaoke World Championship 2010 are Sam Moudden in the men's division, and Maria Saarimaa-Ylitalo, in the women's contest; both are Finns.

Trained monkeys guard India's sports games

NEW DELHI (UPI) -- Trained langur monkeys are being used to scare away wild animals from venues of the Commonwealth Games, due to open this weekend in India, officials said.

Handlers from around the capital of New Delhi were called upon to bring the highly intelligent and aggressive monkeys to chase away wild monkeys, dogs and snakes from around the Games Village stadiums in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, where the games will be held, the British Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The measure was implemented after some teams said they would boycott the games because their accommodations were overrun with wild animals, the Telegraph reported.

Commonwealth Games organizers said packs of wild monkeys have created a nuisance by attacking people and stealing food near the teams' venues.
