Quebec braces for heavy rainfall

MONTREAL (UPI) -- Canadian forecasters were warning of heavy rains and possible flooding in southern Quebec as the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole moved north.

Environment Canada said 2 to 3 inches of rain were expected to fall Thursday in Montreal, Laval and across the regions of Monteregie, Bois-Francs, Quebec City and the Lower St. Lawrence, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News reported.

Poll: Election wins need lobbying money

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- More than two in five U.S. voters say they don't think it's possible to win an election without special interest money, a Rasmussen Reports poll indicates.

Forty-four percent of respondents said political campaigns can't be won without raising money from lobbyists, while 34 percent said they thought elections could be won without special interest funds and 22 percent said they weren't sure.

Axelrod says Bush tax cuts disingenuous

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- White House aide David Axelrod, in an e-mail to supporters, ripped Republicans, saying they were cynical to have Bush-era U.S. tax cuts expire in January.

"Ten years ago, Congress passed broad income tax cuts," Axelrod said in the e-mail message distributed Thursday. "But in a cynical accounting trick designed to mask their long-term impact, they scheduled these cuts to expire next January."

House adjourns after passing funding bill

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The U.S. House adjourned Thursday after passing a stopgap funding bill to keep the federal government running while members run to keep their seats.

The continuing resolution was approved 228-194 shortly after midnight, The Hill reported. The Senate passed the measure Wednesday on a 69-30 vote.
