Oil spill contained at Montreal refinery

MONTREAL (UPI) -- An oil company said Wednesday its diesel spill into the St. Lawrence River at the Port of Montreal has been halted and is being cleaned up.

The diesel spill occurred Tuesday night at Suncor Energy's Petro-Canada refinery at the Port of Montreal, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:30 p.m. after residents of the area reported a strong smell of fuel.

Pavilion at Shanghai expo to be permanent

SHANGHAI (UPI) -- China's pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai will reopen after the fair closes Oct. 31, its management said Wednesday.

Qian Zhiguang, the pavilion's vice director, told Xinhua it will be closed in November for maintenance but will reopen in December, probably with the displays shown during the Expo.

The period for the extended exhibitions would depend on visitor numbers, he said.

Police kill man in Omaha hospital shootout

OMAHA (UPI) -- Police shot and killed a man in an Omaha hospital and two officers were wounded, police said Wednesday.

The shooting happened near the cafeteria on the first floor of Creighton University Medical Center just before 10 a.m., the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Police have not identified the suspect. They said he was shot in the chest and taken into surgery, where he died.

U.S. detects 7.2 quake off Indonesia

GOLDEN, Colo. (UPI) -- Seismologists in the United States reported a 7.2- magnitude earthquake occurred Wednesday off the coast of Indonesia.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the sizable shaker at 2:11 a.m. local time with an epicenter 68 miles north-northwest of the Aru Islands.
