| | Baseball MLB: Philadelphia 12, Colorado 11 DENVER (UPI) -- Chase Utley finished a wild nine-run seventh with a grand-slam Thursday and the Philadelphia Phillies needed every one of the runs to fight off Colorado 12-11.
Colorado had a 7-3 lead going into the seventh, only to see the Phillies send 12 men to the plate. Nine of them reached base.
Utley singled in the first run of the inning and by the time he came up again Ryan Howard had hit a two-run homer, Jayson Werth had delivered a solo shot and Ben Francisco had singled in a run.
Utley's second trip to the plate in the inning came with the bases loaded and he hit the first pitch from Matt Reynolds over the wall in right. That gave the Phillies a 12-7 lead but Colorado scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to get back in the game.
The Rockies then had a run in and runners on first and second with one away in the ninth before Brad Lidge got Clint Barmes on strikes and retired Ryan Spilborghs on a fielder's choice grounder that ended the game.
Philadelphia won its third straight and moved within two games of Atlanta for the lead in the National League East.
The comeback gave the victory to Antonio Bastardo (1-0), who allowed a run on four hits in an inning of relief. The save was Lidge's 19th.
Manny Delcarmen (3-3), the second of three pitchers who worked in the seventh, took the loss.

| | Basketball USA routs Tunisia in world championships ISTANBUL, Turkey (UPI) -- Eric Gordon scored 21 points Thursday in pacing the United States to a 92-57 romp past Tunisia, keeping the Americans unbeaten in the FIBA World Championships.
The victory improved the U.S. record to 5-0 at the end of preliminary round play. The United States won Group B and will go against Angola, the fourth-place finisher in Group A, Sunday in a knockout game. Tunisia was 0-5 in the opening round.
The U.S. team, which had already wrapped up first place in Group B, coasted through much of the game and Coach Mike Krzyzewski used his starters on a limited basis.
The Tunisians played with more fire and were within two points late in the first half and trailed 39-33 at intermission. But the Americans pulled away in the second half with Gordon hitting four 3-point shots and a pair of U.S. spurts pushing the lead to 63-44 near the end of the third period.
Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook each chipped in 14 points and Stephen Curry had 13 in the win.
Tunisia was led in scoring by Marouan Kechrid, who had 15 points, and Macram Ben Romdhane, who had 11.
The other three groups were won by Serbia, Turkey and Lithuania. Serbia captured Group A Thursday with an 84-82 win over previously unbeaten Argentina.
The round of 16 begins Saturday, with Serbia meeting Croatia and defending champion Spain taking on Greece. Turkey will play France and Slovenia will meet Australia Sunday. In addition to the United States-Angola game Monday, Russia will play New Zealand. Tuesday, it will be Lithuania vs. China and Argentina vs. Brazil.
Quarterfinal games will be played next Wednesday and Thursday. The semifinals will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 and the gold medal game will take place the following day.

| | Football COL FB: Utah 27, Pittsburgh 24 (OT) SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -- A 21-yard field goal by Joe Phillips in overtime Thursday gave No. 24 Utah a 27-24 season-opening victory over 15th-ranked Pittsburgh.
The Panthers overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 7 minutes of regulation but Pittsburgh quarterback Tino Sunseri was intercepted by Brian Blechen on the first overtime possession.
Utah then ran the ball six straight times to get to the Pittsburgh 4-yard line and Phillips was perfect to end the first game of the college season between ranked teams.
The Utes won their 18th consecutive home game.
Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, hitting Jereme Brooks for two scores in the second quarter to bring the Utes out of an early seven-point hole.
Wynn hit DeVonte Christopher with a 61-yard touchdown pass with 7:59 to play in the fourth quarter to give the Utes a 24-13 lead.
Sunseri then hit Jon Baldwin with a 44-yard touchdown pass and his two-point conversion throw brought the Panthers within three. Dan Hutchins forced overtime by kicking a 30-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining in regulation.

Alabama DE ineligible for two games
| | Golf Hurricane Earl threatens PGA playoffs NORTON, Mass. (UPI) -- Matt Kuchar will have the lead Friday when the second leg of the monthlong PGA Tour playoffs begins, Hurricane Earl permitting.
The Deutsche Bank Championship, with a field of 99 players, is scheduled for a Labor Day conclusion at the TPC-Boston course. The approach of the hurricane, however, left tournament officials in doubt as to how much golf could be played Friday.
Tee times were moved up 40 minutes to 7 a.m. EDT in hopes of getting in as much as golf as possible.
"We're going to come in Friday and start playing golf and we're going to play all we can," said Mark Russell, the tour's vice president for rules and competition. "We'll just see what happens. We can play in a little wind. But we can't handle lightning.
"We aren't going to take any chances. We want to give people time to get home and take shelter. As long as we can play golf under the rules, we're going to play."
If conditions deteriorate during the day, as expected, the early starters would likely have an advantage.
Among those will be Kuchar, who took over the lead in the FedEx Cup points race with a win last week at the opening playoff event in New Jersey.
Kuchar will be paired with Steve Stricker and Martin Laird, who are second and third on the list. The points leader after the Tour Championship later this month will win the FedEx Cup and $10 million.
Tiger Woods, who moved up 48 places into 65th place last week, has an afternoon tee time. The top 70 on the points list after this tournament move on to next week's BMW Championship in suburban Chicago. At the conclusion of that event, the top 30 will advance to the Tour Championship.
This week's field was reduced from 100 to 99 when Kenny Perry withdrew. Perry is in 90th place and thus gave up the slim hopes he had of winning the FedEx Cup.

| | Tennis Federer breezes into third round NEW YORK (UPI) -- Five-time champion Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, the second and third seeds, rolled into the third round at the U.S. Open Thursday.
Federer, playing in the heat of the afternoon, eliminated Andreas Beck 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Djokovic, appearing in a night match, got past Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Federer won five consecutive titles at the U.S. Tennis Center beginning in 2004, but fell in the finals last year to Juan Martin del Potro. He is 53-5 for his career in the final grand slam event of the year.
Mardy Fish advanced with an impressive 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Pablo Cuevas. Fish had 14 aces while winning for the 18th time in 20 matches.
Fish will meet Australian Open finalist Arnaud Clement, who had a 6-3, 5-5 lead when Eduardo Schwank retired.
The day's biggest upset came when Richard Gasquet eliminated sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Davydenko was a semifinalist at this tournament in 2006 and 2007.
No. 11 seed Marin Cilic was knocked out by Kei Nishikori 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Cilic reached the semifinals at this year's Australian Open.
