The Woods-Stricker team, uniting the world No. 1 and No. 4 players, will be third off for American captain Corey Pavin's squad and will face the European duo of Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher. The first match of the 2010 Ryder Cup has U.S. players Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson going against Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer. They begin the competition at 2:45 a.m. EDT Friday. The second match has Matt Kuchar and Stewart Cink playing for the United States against Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, both from Northern Ireland. The final four ball match of the morning pits Americans Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton, both Ryder Cup rookies, versus Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Other Tour de France champion Contador suspended AIGLE, Switzerland (UPI) -- Tour de France champion Alberto Contador said Thursday a banned substance he tested positive for came from contaminated food. The International Cycling Union on Wednesday said samples from Contador taken during this year's Tour de France came back positive and suspending the three-time Tour champion. Contador's press agent said the banned substance in question was clenbuterol, which is used to treat breathing problems such as asthma, Contador, at a news conference in Spain, said the positive test results were due to a "clear case of food contamination." "It's such a minimal amount that it's only possible to come from a food contamination," Contador said. "And in terms of performance it would not be any use at all -- any expert can confirm this." The International Cycling Union said tests indicated "very small" concentrations of clenbuterol but still provisionally suspended Contador. There was no indication if Contador would have his 2010 Tour de France title take from him. The test samples were taken July 21. Contador had taken the overall Tour de France lead two days earlier and four days after the test won the Tour de France by 39 seconds over Andy Schleck. Since winning the 2010 Tour de France, Contador has left the Astana cycling team and signed on with Saxo Bank. He won his first Tour de France in 2007 and also won in 2009 in addition to this year's title. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Racing NASCAR turns down Bowyer's appeal CONCORD, N.C. (UPI) -- NASCAR officials announced Wednesday the chassis penalty assessed to Clint Bowyer following his win in New Hampshire two weeks ago had been upheld. The Richard Childress Racing team had appealed the stiff penalties handed down to Bowyer and both his crew chief and car chief after the opening race of NASCAR's Chase for the Championship. Bowyer had jumped from 12th place to second in the points chase with the win, but his hopes for a Sprint Cup title were all but wiped out when his team was assessed a 150-point penalty. Crew chief Shane Wilson and car chief Chad Haney were suspended for six races and placed on probation for the rest of the season. Wilson was fined $150,000. The sanctions came after Bowyer's car failed a post-race chassis inspection. A three-member panel heard the appeal during a 5-hour hearing held Tuesday at NASCAR's research and development center. Team owner Richard Childress said he would make another appeal to the governing body's Chief Appellate Officer John Middlebrook. "I gave them the ($150,000) check and our appeal notice," Childress said. "We're going to appeal it to the commissioner (Middlebrook). We're very disappointed. We had proof." Childress said last weekend the chassis was 0.06 of an inch out of alignment because a tow truck hit the rear bumper when the car was pushed into the winner's circle. Childress also said the rear bumper was hit by other drivers congratulating Bowyer for his victory. The tow truck was used to push the car because it ran out of fuel before it could be driven back to the finish line. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Tennis Nadal takes straight-set win in Bangkok BANGKOK (UPI) -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal had no trouble in getting through his second-round match Thursday at the Thailand Open tennis tournament. Nadal, in his first tournament since winning the U.S. Open and completing the career Grand Slam, improved to 60-7 on the year with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ruben Bemelmans. Nadal lost only eight points over nine service games and didn't face a break point in the match. He won 24 of the 26 points when he landed his first serve. While the top-seeded Nadal advance into the quarterfinals, second-seeded and world No. 8 Fernando Verdasco was beaten by Benjamin Becker 6-4, 6-4. Verdasco dropped serve three times in losing to Becker for only the second time in six career matches. Jarkko Nieminen also pulled off an upset, ousting seventh-seeded Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, earning a quarterfinals match against third-seeded Jurgen Melzer. Mikhail Kukushkin won a shot at Nadal in the quarters with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Olivier Rochus. In addition to the Nadal-Kukushkin and Nieminen-Melzer pairings Friday, fourth-seeded Ernests Gulbis will face Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Becker plays Daniel Brands.
