| | Baseball Wainwright to miss final 2010 start ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright, who collected his 20th victory of the year last week, won't pitch for the rest of the season, the Cardinals said Tuesday.
Wainwright, 29, was scratched from a schedule start Thursday against Colorado because of a right forearm muscle strain. He said he noticed the problem sometime ago as a result of sleeping on the arm.
He picked up his career-best 20th victory Friday in beating the Chicago Cubs. He will finish the season 20-11 with a 2.42 earned run average and 230 1/3 innings pitched.
Wainwright has struck out 213 batters, which is third in the National League. His win total, ERA and innings pitched are each second in the league.

| | Football Batch keeps Steelers starting job PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- Veteran Charlie Batch will retain the Steelers' starting quarterback job next week against the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday.
Batch, 35 years old and in his 13th NFL season, was inserted into the lineup Sept. 19 when Dennis Dixon injured his knee.
Dixon was filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, who is serving a four-game NFL suspension but is due to be back in the lineup Oct. 17 when the Steelers return to action after an off week.
Even with the makeshift depth chart at quarterback, the Steelers are 3-0. Batch was 12-of-17 passing for 186 and three touchdowns in a win Sunday over Tampa Bay. It was impressive enough to earn him the starting position for Sunday when the Ravens play in Pittsburgh.
"He is doing a nice job," Tomlin said. "We won last week. That is a good place to start. The guys have a great deal of confidence in him. He is simply a man that's taking advantage of an opportunity. You have to be happy for him."

| | Horseracing Rachel Alexandra retired Rachel Alexandra, the reigning Horse of the Year, has been retired.
The 4-year-old filly finished 2009 with a record of eight wins from eight starts, including a 20-lengths victory in the Kentucky Oaks and historic victories against males in the Preakness Stakes, the Haskell Invitational and the Woodward.
The unbeaten skein was enough to decisively defeat Breeders' Cup Classic winner Zenyatta in the Horse of the Year balloting.
This year, however, the Medaglia d'Oro filly had not been the same, finishing second twice before posting two unspectacular wins. Her last race, the Personal Ensign at Saratoga Aug. 29, was a test to see if she could get 1 1/4 miles -- the distance of the Breeders' Cup Classic. She could not, fading in the stretch to lose by a length to Persistently.
"Rachel Alexandra did not return to her 2009 form," owner Jess Jackson said Tuesday. "I believe it's time to retire our champion and reward her with a less stressful life."
Jackson said Rachel Alexandra will be bred to Curlin, who preceded her as Horse of the Year.
In an irony of timing, Persistently's trainer, Shug McGaughey, was asked about Rachel Alexandra during a media teleconference Tuesday morning.
"She had a tough campaign as a 3-year-old," McGaughey said. "Did it take a little bit out of her? Maybe it did. But she's still a fabulous filly."

| | Other Report: Bomb plot at Commonwealth Games NEW DELHI (UPI) -- The Naxalites and Mars extremist groups are joining forces to target New Delhi's Commonwealth Games with bomb attacks, a leaked top-secret document says.
The police document, obtained by the (Sydney) Daily Telegraph, says law enforcement personnel intercepted phone conversations between alleged terrorists indicating they plan to target "foreign teams and officials."
"The group is spreading connections to damage CWG Delhi including foreign teams and officials," said the document, allegedly from the special forces branch of India's Central Bureau of Investigation.
Indian police had not authenticated the document, which was leaked Monday in Pakistan.

| | Tennis Del Potro defeated in return to ATP play BANGKOK (UPI) -- Juan Martin del Potro, who missed eight months of competitive tennis because of a wrist injury, was defeated Tuesday in first-round action of the Thailand Open.
Del Potro, seeded fifth, hadn't played since the Australian Open because of surgery on his right wrist and was unable to defend his 2009 U.S. Open title. He dropped a tight match in his return Tuesday, losing 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 to Olivier Rochus, despite 16 aces.
Del Potro lost 31 points over 11 service games and, while he won seven break-point situations, Rochus was able to get a break in each set, which determined the match.
No. 8-seeded Michael Berrer, the only other seeded player on Tuesday's first-round schedule, was also beaten. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez took out Berrer 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
In other matches Tuesday, Ruben Bemelmans topped Frederik Nielsen 6-2, 6-3; Mikhail Kukushkin slipped past Ryler DeHeart 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4; Rainer Schuettler beat Ricardo Mello 6-4, 6-2; Jarkko Nieminen was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Danai Udomchoke; and Dudi Sela advanced over Konstantin Kravchuk 6-3, 6-4.
